Orlando Pirates have continued their strong run of results this season, with coach Abdeslam Ouaddou highlighting the importance of leadership, defensive organisation and consistency in his team selections.
The Buccaneers secured a narrow 1-0 victory over African Stars, extending their record across all competitions to 12 wins, two draws and one defeat in 15 matches.
Their only loss came against Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 final. Pirates have also recorded 11 clean sheets during that period, underlining their defensive strength.
Ouaddou Stresses Importance of a Strong Team Spine
Ouaddou has explained that his tactical approach relies on having experienced leaders in key positions across the team.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, the Pirates coach identified the goalkeeper, two central defenders, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and striker as the essential components of what he described as the team’s spine.
He said leadership was needed in every line to ensure the team operated as a coordinated unit.
Ouaddou explained that while the entire squad remained important to his playing philosophy, having leaders in strategically important positions was a priority.
Sipho Chaine’s Clean-Sheet Record Strengthens His Position
Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine has been a key figure in Pirates’ defensive performances, with his record over recent seasons reflecting his contribution.
During the 2024-25 CAF Champions League campaign, Chaine recorded nine clean sheets in 14 appearances.
He also played every minute of Pirates’ Betway Premiership campaign last season, registering 21 clean sheets in 30 league matches as the club pursued the domestic title.
The 29-year-old has continued that form this season, recording seven clean sheets in eight league appearances.
His performances have reinforced his standing within the team as Pirates continue to compete across domestic and continental competitions.
African Stars Return Leg Next on Pirates’ Schedule
Pirates’ next assignment is the second leg of their CAF Champions League qualifying tie against African Stars, scheduled for Friday, 23 October.
The team will then turn its attention to the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 31 October.
Both fixtures will provide further opportunities for Chaine and the rest of the Pirates squad to maintain their defensive record and continue their run of results under Ouaddou.
