A new initiative is taking shape to revolutionize the way humanitarian aid is provided, focusing on proactive solutions that can better prepare vulnerable populations for the effects of climate change.
Building on the success of recent Anticipatory Action (AA) pilots in Kenya and Nepal, this initiative will collaborate with startups, NGOs, and various partners to implement cutting-edge technology solutions.
By utilizing advancements in climate data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and crypto payment systems, the goal is to create a more efficient, responsive, and equitable humanitarian aid system.
The Goals of the Initiative
In the short term, the initiative will focus on identifying and funding promising Anticipatory Action solutions.
These solutions are designed to help communities at risk of climate-related disasters by addressing vulnerabilities before the impacts occur.
The initiative will also work on building a strong evidence base to demonstrate how Anticipatory Action can create a more effective and just system for humanitarian aid.
The long-term objective is to scale up these programs globally, attracting new capital to further support and expand this proactive approach to humanitarian work.
The Challenge We Face
Currently, nearly 300 million people worldwide are in need of humanitarian assistance, with $223.7 billion allocated for aid in 2023.
While this is a significant amount, the vast majority of it—99%—is spent reactively, after disasters have already struck.
Only 1% is used for proactive measures aimed at reducing risks before crises occur.
This reactive model is inefficient and leaves vulnerable populations at greater risk.
The goal is to shift the focus from post-disaster relief to preemptive action, where aid is provided before disasters hit, allowing communities to better prepare and recover.
Who Is Eligible?
This opportunity is open to organizations that operate in regions such as Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Pacific Islands, and the Western Balkans.
Eligible organizations should be piloting Anticipatory Action solutions that aim to improve the delivery of humanitarian aid and better protect vulnerable communities from the impacts of climate change.
The Potential of Anticipatory Action
Research has shown that more than half of all humanitarian crises can be predicted, with 20% being highly predictable.
When aid is delivered proactively, before disaster strikes, it is 7 times more cost-effective than traditional post-disaster aid.
Anticipatory Action allows for a system that can anticipate and respond to crises before they escalate, reducing the overall negative impact of these shocks and helping vulnerable communities build resilience over time.
Benefits for Selected Partners
Organizations selected to participate in this initiative will receive equity-free grants of up to $100,000, provided they meet pre-agreed milestones.
In addition to funding, selected partners will benefit from mentorship, advisory services on impact measurement, access to partnership opportunities, knowledge exchange, and brand exposure.
This holistic support aims to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the Anticipatory Action programs implemented.
Deadline and Application Details
Organizations interested in applying for this opportunity must submit their applications by February 14, 2025.
This initiative offers a chance to be part of a transformative shift in the way humanitarian aid is delivered, and help shape a more resilient future for climate-vulnerable communities.
