Okonjo-Iweala’s Son Achieves Medical Milestone In The US

On Thursday, Okonjo-Iweala announced on Twitter that her son was one of the first spinal surgeons to successfully navigate a lumbar spinal fusion using a robot.

The WTO chief tweeted the happy news on her verified account, congratulating and encouraging her son on his medical achievement.

“Congratulations Dr. Uchechi Iweala, on being one of the first spinal surgeons in Maryland to execute a successful guided lumbar spinal fusion with a robot!” she posted alongside photos from the procedure. I am so proud to be your mother! “Keep it up!”

According to the Center for Advanced Orthopeadics, Dr. Iweala is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in spine surgery.

The doctor earned his Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees from Harvard and completed his residency training in orthopaedic surgery at George Washington University. FurtDrmore, Dr. Iweala completed a fellowship in spine surgery at New York University.

He majors in Robotic Spine Surgery, Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, Cervical and Lumbar Disc Replacement, Spinal Fusion/Arthrodesis, Nerve Releases, and others.
