A new report from the advocacy group Open Doors reveals that Nigeria saw the highest levels of violence against Christians in 2024, surpassing other nations by a significant margin.
According to the World Watch List, released on January 15, over 3,100 Christians were killed and more than 2,800 were kidnapped in Nigeria alone last year.
These numbers are far greater than those in any other country.
Other Notable Findings in the 2024 World Watch List
The report sheds light on other countries facing severe persecution as well.
India ranked first in arrests of Christians, with over 2,100 Christians arrested in 2024.
Meanwhile, Rwanda reported the highest number of attacks on Christian churches and buildings, with 4,000 incidents.
Global Rise in Christian Persecution
The Open Doors report emphasizes a troubling trend: Christian persecution has been increasing in many parts of the world.
Out of the 100 countries monitored by the group, 13 were classified as experiencing “extreme” levels of persecution against Christians.
Over 380 million Christians worldwide are estimated to face significant levels of persecution and discrimination because of their faith.
The Top Countries for Christian Persecution
The report identifies North Korea, Somalia, Yemen, Libya, and Sudan as the top five countries where Christian persecution is most severe.
These nations, along with Nigeria (which ranks No. 7), are part of a list of 13 countries where Christians face “extreme” levels of persecution.
Other countries on this list include Eritrea, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, India, Saudi Arabia, and Myanmar.
This report highlights the ongoing struggles faced by Christians around the world and the growing threat of religious persecution in certain regions.
