NFL legend Rob Gronkowski stuns Swindon Storm players by interrupting Super Bowl broadcast to announce massive £400,000 grant for grassroots American football

Super Bowl Sunday is always full of surprises, but for one grassroots American football team in the UK, the biggest shock of the night didn’t come from the game itself.

Swindon Storm, a dedicated club growing the sport across the pond, received an unexpected message from none other than NFL legend Rob Gronkowski.

Gronkowski Crashes the Broadcast

As members of Swindon Storm gathered at a local sports bar to watch the Kansas City Chiefs face off against the Philadelphia Eagles, the last thing they expected was for their screen to cut out.

But instead of technical difficulties, they got a message straight from the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star.

“Hi Swindon! Rob Gronkowski here,” he greeted the stunned crowd.

“Sorry to interrupt your Super Bowl Sunday, but I have a special message for everyone at Swindon Storm watching from Route 66 tonight.”

A Life-Changing Grant for the Club

Gronkowski went on to reveal that Swindon Storm had been selected as the first recipient of this year’s Cash4Clubs grant, a program funded by Flutter to support grassroots sports.

The grant, worth £400,000, would help the team continue its mission of making American football accessible in the UK.

“One of your coaches, Andy Wilson, applied for a Cash4Clubs grant,” Gronkowski explained.

“They heard about all the great work you guys are doing to grow American football in the UK and keep adults involved in sport.

So here I am, on the biggest screen in Swindon, to tell you that your club is the first of 200 clubs across the UK and Ireland to be awarded a Cash4Clubs grant this year.

Best of luck in the BAFA league. And remember: You are the Storm! Enjoy the big game tonight.”

What the Funding Means for Swindon Storm

For Swindon Storm, this grant is nothing short of transformational.

Coach Andy Wilson shared that the funds would go toward essential equipment like pads and protective gear for new players, making the sport safer and more accessible for those who want to join.

The Cash4Clubs program, which has been running for nearly 20 years, awards 200 grants of £2,000 each year, primarily focusing on clubs in underprivileged areas.

Last year, 85% of grant recipients reported an increase in health and fitness activities and overall participation.

Eagles Take the Super Bowl Win

While Swindon Storm had their own celebration, the Super Bowl itself ended with Philadelphia Eagles fans flooding the streets in victory.

The Eagles secured their second championship in seven years after taking advantage of a Kansas City Chiefs collapse.

In the aftermath, the team’s official account posted—and quickly deleted—a message on X (formerly Twitter) hinting at a victory parade on Friday.

The reason for the removal remains unclear, but one thing is certain: the Eagles delivered when it mattered most.

The Bigger Picture: Supporting Grassroots Sports

The Cash4Clubs initiative, backed by Flutter UKI, has invested nearly £6.5 million into grassroots clubs since its inception.

With 199 more grants set to be distributed by the end of the month, countless other teams will benefit just as Swindon Storm has.

For now, Swindon Storm can enjoy their well-earned reward and continue building American football in the UK.

And who knows? Maybe one day, one of their players will make it to the Super Bowl themselves.
