The National Horseracing Authority (NHA) of Southern Africa has launched an official inquiry into an incident that took place during Race 2 at Turffontein Racecourse on Sunday, 26 January 2025.
This investigation will look into the actions of two prominent jockeys, Gavin Lerena and Jason Gates, who were involved in a controversial exchange during the race.
The inquiry, which was initially set for 4 February, has now been rescheduled to Friday, 21 February 2025, at 09:30 at the NHA offices in Johannesburg.
What Happened During the Race?
The incident occurred during the second race of the day when jockey Gavin Lerena, riding Gimme A Storm, and jockey Jason Gates, aboard Blurred Vision, were racing neck-and-neck down the home stretch.
At the 150-meter mark, Lerena stood up in his saddle and struck Gates multiple times on the back with his crop.
The two jockeys had been close together for some time, which may have led to the altercation.
Lerena, who has been in excellent form this season, faces an inquiry with serious implications.
The NHA official confirmed that there will be no option for an Admission of Guilt (AOG) in this case, meaning Lerena will have to face the consequences of the incident in full.
Lerena’s Stellar Season Could Be Impacted
As one of the leading jockeys in South Africa, Lerena has been competing fiercely for the national title, currently in a three-way tie at the top with fellow jockeys Craig Zackey and Richard Fourie.
A suspension, should it be imposed, could significantly hurt his chances of being crowned champion jockey for the season.
Lerena has enjoyed a strong start to 2025, including winning two races at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth in Cape Town.
Any punishment from the inquiry could have a lasting effect on his momentum for the rest of the year.
Lerena’s Public Apology
Following the incident, Lerena took to social media to issue a heartfelt apology.
In his statement, he explained that the actions were completely out of character and not something he typically condones.
He expressed regret for his actions and acknowledged that his behavior was a result of being provoked by Gates during the race.
“I deeply regret the incident, and I extend my sincerest apologies to the owners, trainer, sponsors, fans, and the race day authorities affected,” Lerena said.
He further explained that his reaction was driven by what he perceived as a threat or provocation, something that can often happen in competitive sports.
Lerena made it clear that he values the integrity of the sport and the racing community, and that the incident does not align with the values he strives to uphold.
He reiterated his commitment to maintaining the high standards expected of him and apologized to all involved for the disruption caused by his actions.
The Race Commentary and Public Reaction
Interestingly, the commentator calling the race did not mention the incident during the broadcast, leading some to wonder if the altercation was downplayed to avoid drawing attention to the controversial moment.
The incident has sparked a wider debate among racing fans and the public about what kind of punishment, if any, should be handed down to Lerena.
Some believe that the nature of his actions could warrant a suspension, while others feel the matter could be resolved with a warning or fine.
What’s Next for Lerena?
As the NHA investigation continues, all eyes will be on the upcoming hearing scheduled for 21 February.
The inquiry will likely delve into whether Lerena’s actions were a result of poor sportsmanship or a natural reaction to the intense competitive environment of horse racing.
Racing enthusiasts and fans are left wondering what the future holds for the jockey, and what impact the inquiry could have on the sport as a whole.
