When Nasreddine Nabi took over as head coach of Kaizer Chiefs, he inherited a club in disarray.
The team had just come off their worst season in history, finishing a disappointing tenth in the 2023/24 season.
As a result, former manager Cavin Johnson was let go, paving the way for Nabi to take the reins.
The anticipation surrounding Nabi’s debut was palpable, with many wondering if he could be the one to turn the team’s fortunes around.
His first few matches with Kaizer Chiefs, including back-to-back league games, had the country buzzing: Could this be the year the team finally rises from the ashes?
Slow Progress and Current Position
However, three matches into the season, the results have been less than stellar.
The team remains on just two wins and sits in eighth place, fourteen points behind league leaders Orlando Pirates.
They are also only five points ahead of TS Galaxy, who currently occupy the bottom of the standings.
Nabi’s Concerns and Reflections
Despite the mixed results, Nabi remains optimistic about the potential for improvement. During Kaizer Chiefs’ media open day, he shared his thoughts on the team’s progress.
“I wasn’t happy with the stop-start of the league, but we need to accept it and respect the competition.
We made the most of the recent FIFA break, participating in a cup and playing a friendly against a first-division team.
This allowed us to give more minutes to players who had been heavily involved this season,” Nabi explained.
He went on to highlight some positive performances, particularly from players like Ox Mthethwa, Njabulo Ngcobo, and Pule Mmodi, who impressed in the Home of Legends Cup.
Richards Bay Clash and Injury Woes
Looking ahead, Nabi is focused on the upcoming match against Richards Bay, a team struggling in the league.
Despite their position, Nabi knows they’ll come out with everything they have in an attempt to turn their season around.
“Richards Bay’s situation is tough, but I’m sure they’ll give 200% in this game—not because it’s Kaizer Chiefs, but because they are desperate for a positive result.
We respect them, but we want nothing less than three points. We need to win, especially after our game against Sundowns. We go to Polokwane with high morale,” he said.
However, there’s a shadow of doubt hanging over the match.
Nabi expressed concern over the fitness of Ngcobo, who had been recovering well from an injury but picked up another setback in training.
He is now a doubt for the Richards Bay clash.
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, Nabi’s challenge is clear: he must turn things around and deliver results that will see Kaizer Chiefs climb up the league table.
With a blend of optimism and caution, he continues to prepare his team for the tough road ahead.
