The early hours of Saturday morning turned terrifying for Minnesota as two Democratic lawmakers and their families came under attack.
Despite a rapid police response and a shootout, the suspected gunman managed to escape, leaving communities on edge and officials scrambling for answers.
Lawmakers John Hoffman and Melissa Hortman Critically Injured in Separate Attacks
It all started shortly after 2 a.m. when State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times at their home in Champlin, about 20 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
Both remain in critical condition as authorities work to piece together what happened.
Just a couple of hours later, around 4 a.m., another attack unfolded at the home of State Representative Melissa Hortman in Brooklyn Park, roughly eight miles south.
The terrifying spree has left residents shaken and raised urgent questions about motive and suspects.
Police Exchange Gunfire With Suspect Outside Hortman’s Home But He Escapes
After responding to the shooting at Hoffman’s residence, officers decided to check on Hortman’s home nearby.
That’s when they encountered the suspect, who opened fire on them around 3:35 a.m. in a brief but intense gun battle.
Despite the exchange, the suspect was able to flee the scene, according to Drew Evans, head of Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
The gunman remains at large as law enforcement ramps up efforts to find him.
Authorities Investigate Possible Multiple Gunmen Involved in Coordinated Attacks
Officials held a press conference Saturday morning confirming that the investigation is ongoing and that they are exploring whether more than one shooter was involved in the coordinated attacks.
So far, no arrests have been made, and the threat remains active.
FBI and Local Police Collaborate in Expansive Search Amid Growing Public Concern
The FBI has joined local police and sheriff’s deputies in a massive manhunt to track down the shooter or shooters.
Meanwhile, Governor Tim Walz has condemned the attacks and activated the State Emergency Operations Center, signaling the seriousness of the situation.
