Michail Antonio prepares for recovery journey as West Ham striker heads to Dubai after terrifying car crash in Essex

West Ham forward Michail Antonio is taking a major step forward in his recovery after his terrifying car crash in December.

The 34-year-old is set to travel to Dubai, where he will spend nearly two weeks at a specialized training facility to aid his rehabilitation.

He is expected to return to the UK on February 20, but his return to football remains uncertain.

A Life-Threatening Accident in Essex

Antonio’s life took a dramatic turn on December 7 when his £260,000 grey Ferrari collided with a tree in Essex while he was driving home from training.

The impact left him trapped in the wreckage for over 45 minutes, and emergency services had to cut him out before airlifting him to the hospital.

The striker suffered a broken leg and underwent surgery, putting his football career on hold.

Despite the severity of the crash, Antonio remains optimistic and thankful for his survival.

On New Year’s Eve, he shared an emotional message reflecting on how the experience changed his perspective on life.

Gratitude and Reflection on Life’s Fragility

In his heartfelt statement, Antonio expressed deep gratitude to the medical professionals, emergency services, and West Ham United for their support.

He admitted that he had taken life for granted before this near-death experience and now sees every moment as precious.

“Every year, I’ve struggled to find the right words to express what I’m grateful for,” he wrote.

“But this year, I know exactly what it is—being alive.

What I’ve been through has opened my eyes. Life is fragile, and every single moment matters.”

He also thanked his teammates, West Ham fans, and the wider football community for their outpouring of love and support.

A History of Unfortunate Accidents

This isn’t the first time Antonio has been involved in a car crash.

On Christmas Day in 2019, he crashed his £210,000 Lamborghini into a London home’s front garden.

That incident, however, was not as serious as his recent accident.

Antonio has been a key figure at West Ham since joining in 2015, scoring 83 goals in 323 appearances.

He holds the record as the club’s top Premier League goalscorer with 68 goals, surpassing legends like Paolo Di Canio and Jarrod Bowen.

What’s Next for Antonio?

Although he is not expected to play again this season, Antonio remains determined to return to the pitch.

He ended his New Year’s Eve message on a hopeful note, telling fans: “Happy New Year—and I’ll be back on that pitch soon.”

For now, his focus is on making a full recovery, and his rehabilitation in Dubai marks another step in that journey.

West Ham supporters and the football world will be eagerly waiting to see him back in action when the time is right.
