South Africa’s united opposition to the African National Congress (ANC)

South Africa’s seven opposition parties have put aside their differences and formed an alliance known as the Multi-Party Charter for South Africa. According to Daily Maverick, the coalition represents the first significant challenge to ANC dominance in 30 years of elections.

Last month (August 2023), the group got together for the first time at a two-day meeting held at Emperor’s Palace. The seven-person delegation included (in alphabetical order):

Christopher Claasen, Spectrum National Party (SNP) Action South Africa (ASA) Herman Mashaba, Democratic Alliance (DA) John Steenhuisen, Freedom Front Plus (FF+) Pieter Groenewald
United Independent Movement (UDM): Neil de Beer Independent South African National Civic Organization (ISANCO): Zukile Luyenge Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP): Velenkosini Hlabisa

PROMISE MADE

By signing the promise during the historic conference, the SA opposition alliance demonstrated its commitment to working together, putting an end to petty infighting, and uniting behind a common goal: winning the national elections in 2024.

According to the Brenthurst Foundation’s analysis, the 2024 election has two parties with radically contrasting ideologies. Based on their findings, the foundation concludes that 78.6 percent of South African voters want a coalition government.
PRE-ELECTIONS AGREEMENT

The SA opposition alliance has promised to work together if they win enough seats in the upcoming election. The agreement specifies a number of goals that the SA opposition coalition should strive to achieve. Among these are:

Economic expansion
Stopping the Power Cuts
Strengthening the Rule of Law
Expanding access to high-quality medical care

“Remains true to the constitutional imperative for social justice, it will redress our unjust past by promoting non-racialism and unity in diversity,” the SA opposition alliance said in a statement. “This will be achieved through professional and meritocratic public service by ending cadre deployment and delivering basic services to all through high-quality infrastructure,” the SA opposition alliance declared.
