Marnus Labuschagne has been given another opportunity to revive his Test career after Australia included the out-of-form batter in its 16-man squad for the upcoming three-Test tour of South Africa.
The 32-year-old, who was born in South Africa, remains a key part of Australia’s Test plans despite a prolonged run of disappointing results with the bat.
Labuschagne has not reached three figures in Test cricket since 2023 and endured another difficult series during Australia’s recent two-Test assignment against Bangladesh.
Labuschagne’s Form Under Growing Scrutiny
Labuschagne’s recent scores of 1, 31 and 4 highlighted his struggles during the Bangladesh series.
His omission from Australia’s subsequent squads for six one-day internationals in Zimbabwe and South Africa further underlined the pressure surrounding his place in the team.
Despite those concerns, Australia’s selectors have decided that the experienced batter deserves another chance when the Test side travels to South Africa.
Chief selector George Bailey acknowledged that Labuschagne needs to produce more with the bat but insisted the selectors remain confident in his ability to contribute.
“We’re not shying away from the fact that we’d like some more runs from Marn,” Bailey said.
“But we’re also confident that he can still make a positive contribution to that squad.”
Bailey Defends Australia’s Batting Group
Bailey also stressed that Labuschagne is not the only Australian batter whose recent performances have fallen short of expectations.
“Our batting group in its entirety, not just Marn, probably hasn’t been functioning as successfully as we would like,” he said.
Asked whether the South Africa series represented a final opportunity for Labuschagne to secure his Test future, Bailey refused to describe it in those terms.
“No, I wouldn’t say that. But again, it’s a hypothetical, isn’t it?” he replied.
The comments suggest that Australia’s selectors are prepared to judge Labuschagne within the wider performance of the team’s batting unit rather than making his position solely dependent on the upcoming tour.
South Africa Return Evokes Sandpapergate Memories
Australia’s visit to South Africa will carry additional significance because it will be the team’s first Test tour there since the infamous ball-tampering scandal of 2018.
The controversy erupted during the third Test in Cape Town when Australia were found to have deliberately altered the condition of the ball using sandpaper.
Captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were subsequently banned from international cricket for 12 months.
The episode became one of the most damaging scandals in Australian cricket history and continues to form part of the backdrop whenever the team returns to South Africa.
Several Familiar Names Remain
Australia’s current squad contains six players who were part of the side that suffered a 3-1 Test series defeat in South Africa in 2018.
Captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Steve Smith and Matt Renshaw are the survivors from that tour.
The latest squad also includes three additions in Cooper Connolly, Matthew Kuhnemann and Michael Neser.
Apart from those changes, the group is otherwise unchanged from Australia’s most recent Test squad against Bangladesh.
Three-Test Tour Begins in Durban
Australia will begin the series in Durban on October 9 before travelling to Gqeberha for the second Test.
The final match of the three-Test contest will be played in Cape Town, giving Labuschagne and his teammates three opportunities to make an impression in conditions that are expected to provide a demanding challenge.
For Labuschagne, the tour represents another chance to rediscover the form that once made him one of the most prolific batters in Test cricket and strengthen his position in Australia’s long-term plans.
