Lance Corporal Austin Schwenk, 19, was found dead in a barracks room on Wednesday night

Lance Corporal Austin Schwenk, 19, was shot and killed at Camp Lejeune on Wednesday night. The shooting occurred in a barracks room at around 10.15pm.

Another Marine was taken into custody at the scene and is being held over Schwenk’s death.

The suspect has not been publicly identified.

Schwenk was a member of the 6th Marine Regiment and was enlisted in June 2022.

He was born in Onslow County, where Camp Lejeune is based, and graduated from Riverside High School in Painesville, Ohio in 2022.

Schwenk’s death is being investigated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Authorities have described it as an “isolated incident between two Marines.”

Schwenk’s father is also a Marine.

He told a local newspaper in May 2022 that he chose to enlist in the Marines to follow in his father’s footsteps.

The sprawling Camp Lejeune covers about 240 square miles and is home to the II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Its beaches and ranges provide training in amphibious assaults and urban warfare.

The death came two days before the base was scheduled to conduct annual training known as Exercise Urgent Response.
