Lucky draw: TikTok user ‘hacks’ electricity meter for more units [watch]

Several South African households depend on prepaid electricity and while the cost of electricity is on the rise, it seems one TikTok user has “cracked” the code for “free” electricity tokens. In a TikTok video, a man can be seen punching in a series of numbers before his electricity units increase significantly…

In a TikTok video posted by @vero_mapetja on 13 May, a man stands at his electricity meter and asks viewers to pay close attention to what he’s doing.

Before typing anything on the number pad, the total number of electricity units amounts to 120,94 KWh.

The man then types in the numbers #-0-0-4-# and his units immediately jump to 27 931,10 kWh!

The man and his friend in the background then scream “Danko!” in celebration of the moment.

HOW MUCH IS SOUTH AFRICA PAYING FOR ELECTRICITY? 

In April, the price of electricity increased by a whopping 9.6% but sadly for Mzansi, there is no end in sight with another increase on the cards.

According to Business Tech, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has proposed another 7.47% increase from July.

“The reality is that consumers have been wrestling with constant electricity price increases over the past year – with no end in sight,” said chief executive of Debt Rescue, Neil Roets.
