Celebrity chef and TV personality Lorna Maseko has landed a new high-profile gig—curating the South African Airways (SAA) menu for the upcoming fiscal year.
The news was first shared by entertainment commentator Mlu Mbokazi on social media, where Maseko herself confirmed the exciting partnership via her Instagram account.
According to Maseko, the dishes she’s designed will be exclusively available for business class passengers.
The celebrated chef explained that her menu is inspired by her Tswana heritage, alongside other Pan-African influences that highlight the continent’s diverse and vibrant food culture.
She proudly shared, “Proud to announce my partnership with @flysaa to create a menu for this fiscal year! Rooted in my culture as a Motswana and inspired by Pan-African flavours, these dishes celebrate the beauty of our continent.
Flying in business class? Enjoy comfort & absolute deliciousness.”
Public Criticism Follows the Announcement
Despite Maseko’s enthusiastic announcement, not everyone is on board with her new role.
After the news spread on social media, many South Africans took to platforms like X to voice their opinions.
A number of users have criticized her cooking skills, questioning whether she truly deserves the gig or if it’s simply a matter of having the right connections.
One user, @Ndaba_2025, bluntly asked, “But can she cook, or is it just connection?!?” while @Ziningi_Leo commented, “Must be pretty privilege cause Lorna Maseko upheka rubbish.”
Another user, @Ntombenhle124, remarked, “But Lorna can’t really cook and she knows it too.
SA is indeed alive with possibilities.
You just have to know people in high places and you’ll be set. @Fikz_the_Cook was supposed to be the one getting this gig.”
Calls for Another Chef to Take the Spotlight
The backlash didn’t stop there, as some fans of other chefs expressed frustration over Maseko’s selection. @RoodroNicholl went as far as to say, “I’m sorry but this is utterly BS… Sis @Fikz_the_Cook should have been the one to get this partnership.
I love and respect Lorna, but she can’t cook to save her life!!! South Africa still remains the biggest joke in that regard, I’m sorry.
It’s just a pity how they are handled.”
The criticisms highlight the ongoing debate around celebrity chefs in South Africa, with some questioning whether fame or culinary skill should be the determining factor in securing high-profile food partnerships.
