Hurricane Ian is currently churning toward Cuba, and scientists anticipate that it will rapidly strengthen in the warm Gulf seas as it approaches the western coast of Florida.

Monday, Ian is forecast to pass across the Cayman Islands, followed by western Cuba Monday night or Tuesday morning. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a hurricane watch for Isla de la Juventud, Pinar del Rio, and Artemisia in Cuba.

At 2 p.m. EDT on Monday, the NHC reported that the storm was 195 miles southeast of Cuba’s western peak and moving northwest at 13 mph.

As of this report, Ian was a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 85 mph. The hurricane is projected to reach 111 mph, a Category 3 storm, overnight or early Tuesday morning.

A hurricane watch is in force for half of the Florida Gulf Coast, from Englewood to the Anclote River, including Tampa Bay, where the National Hurricane Center anticipates the highest storm surge, up to 10 feet.

Heavy precipitation is anticipated to cause flooding throughout Florida, including as far east as Orlando.

“This is typical rainfall flooding that will make movement challenging. Consequently, you should not wait until the last minute to move and make preparations “Monday morning, Jamie Rhome, acting director of NHC, provided an update via livestream. He added that preparations in the Tampa Bay area should be complete by Tuesday evening.
