A recently leaked video has sparked outrage among Liverpool fans, raising suspicions of foul play in some controversial moments involving Premier League referee David Coote.
The video, which reportedly dates back several years, allegedly shows Coote mocking the club and their former manager Jurgen Klopp with offensive language.
As a result, some supporters are now questioning whether certain disputed calls during his officiating career were influenced by personal biases.
The Video and Its Fallout
The footage, which surfaced after Coote refereed Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, features the referee making derogatory comments about Klopp, calling him a “German **” and “f*ing arrogant.”
Coote, 42, has been officiating Premier League matches since 2018, a period in which Liverpool, alongside Manchester City, were involved in some of the closest title races in recent memory.
This has led some fans to wonder if Coote’s personal feelings might have influenced key decisions during these tense matches.
Calls Into Question
In the wake of the video leak, some Liverpool supporters have revisited controversial moments from Coote’s tenure as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR), voicing concerns that these decisions might have been skewed by his apparent disdain for the club.
One user on X (formerly Twitter) expressed their frustration, labeling the situation “corruption” and listing several decisions they believe were unjust.
A Look at Controversial Calls
Among the most contentious decisions that have resurfaced is one from Liverpool’s 2019/20 Premier League-winning season.
Fans still argue that they should have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Divock Origi just before Marcus Rashford’s opener for Manchester United.
The call was made during a critical moment in the Reds’ title chase.
Another significant flashpoint occurred during the Merseyside derby in 2021.
The match, which ended in a 2-2 draw, featured a number of questionable decisions, most notably Jordan Pickford’s challenge on Virgil van Dijk.
The tackle, which led to Van Dijk suffering an ACL injury, went unpunished, and the lack of action infuriated Liverpool supporters.
The Reds also felt aggrieved after a late goal in that game was ruled offside despite evidence suggesting Sadio Mane was not ahead of the play.
The Arsenal Handball Incident
Perhaps the most debated VAR decision in recent history came in December 2023 during a 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
Martin Ødegaard’s clear handball inside the box was not awarded as a penalty, and VAR upheld the referee’s decision, much to the disbelief of Liverpool fans.
Referees’ chief Howard Webb later admitted that a penalty should have been given, acknowledging that “the game expects a penalty in this situation,” a statement which added fuel to the fire.
Investigation and Speculation
While PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) has initiated a preliminary investigation into the leaked video, there is also the possibility that it could be a deepfake or manipulated using artificial intelligence.
As of now, the situation remains under review, and fans are left to speculate about what the next steps will be.
The video’s shocking revelations have only deepened the skepticism among some supporters, who feel that personal bias may have influenced key moments in their club’s pursuit of glory.
