M&C Saatchi, one of the most prominent names in UK advertising, is set for a significant leadership change as Chief Executive Moray MacLennan announces his retirement at the end of September.
The company’s Chair, Zilah Byng-Thorne, who took on the role in June, will temporarily assume his responsibilities while a search for a permanent replacement begins.
MacLennan’s Impact and M&C Saatchi’s History
Moray MacLennan played a crucial role in reviving M&C Saatchi when he took over as CEO three years ago.
Under his leadership, the company managed to overcome challenging times and regain its position in the advertising industry.
M&C Saatchi, founded by the famous brothers Maurice and Charles, is renowned for its close association with the Conservative Party and its influential campaigns, such as the iconic “Labour Isn’t Working” campaign in 1978, which sparked political controversy.
Past Financial Challenges and Leadership Changes
In 2019, M&C Saatchi faced financial turmoil as accounting errors were discovered, amounting to around £12 million and dating back to 2014.
The situation led to the departure of then CEO David Kershaw and other executives.
A subsequent investigation by the Financial Conduct Authority followed, and tech entrepreneur Vin Murria, who became the largest shareholder with a 12.5% stake, controversially acquired the company.
MacLennan’s Legacy and Compensation
Having been with M&C Saatchi for 28 years, MacLennan has played a significant role in shaping the company’s success.
He was compensated with £1.4 million last year, including a bonus of £650,000, and holds shares in the company worth millions.
During his gardening leave, he will continue to receive payment for another 12 months.
MacLennan’s Farewell and Vision for the Future
Reflecting on his time with M&C Saatchi, MacLennan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with talented individuals and create impactful work.
He believes the company is well-prepared for the future and welcomes the arrival of new energy and ideas.
As he steps down, he looks forward to witnessing the continuation of M&C Saatchi’s legacy.
The retirement of Moray MacLennan marks a significant transition for M&C Saatchi, a company with a rich history and influential presence in the advertising world.
As the search for a new CEO commences, the company looks to embrace fresh perspectives and strategies to further its success.
The positive market response, with M&C Saatchi’s shares rising after the announcement, indicates a sense of optimism about the company’s future.
