The Kremlin has said it has no knowledge of reports claiming FBI Director Kash Patel is preparing to travel to Russia later this year, distancing itself from speculation surrounding a possible high-profile visit.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov addressed the reports during a media briefing on Tuesday, stating that he had received no information suggesting such a trip was being planned.
Peskov Says No Details Have Been Shared
Responding to questions from journalists, Peskov said there was “no information whatsoever” regarding any visit by Patel to Russia.
However, he acknowledged that official visits involving intelligence or security officials are often arranged discreetly and are not typically announced in advance, leaving open the possibility that sensitive diplomatic engagements may remain confidential until after they occur.
Report Suggests October Trip Is Under Consideration
The speculation follows a report by Politico, which cited a source within the US administration claiming Patel is expected to visit Russia in mid-October.
According to the report, the proposed itinerary would see the FBI chief travel to both Moscow and St. Petersburg, with the visit potentially taking place on October 14 and 15.
No official confirmation has been issued by either the US or Russian governments.
Visit Would Come Amid Heightened US-Russia Tensions
Any trip by the head of the FBI to Russia would attract significant international attention given the strained relationship between Washington and Moscow.
Relations between the two countries remain tense across a range of security, diplomatic and cyber issues, making any direct engagement between senior officials particularly noteworthy.
Patel Previously Warned of Alleged Russian Cyber Activity
The reported travel plans also come after Patel publicly accused Russia of carrying out a cyber campaign targeting users of the encrypted messaging platform Signal.
According to Patel, the alleged operation focused on individuals considered to possess valuable intelligence, including current and former US government officials, military personnel, politicians and journalists.
He claimed the campaign was designed to compromise the Signal accounts of those viewed as high-value targets, although Russian authorities have not publicly responded to those allegations.
No Official Confirmation Yet
For now, the reported visit remains unconfirmed.
While the Kremlin insists it has no information about Patel’s travel plans, Peskov noted that security-related visits are often handled without public announcements.
Until either government provides official confirmation, the reported October trip remains the subject of speculation.
