Kermit Erasmus’ potential move to Cape Town City FC sparks candid remarks from assistant coach Lebogang Manyama

As the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season approaches, Cape Town City FC’s assistant coach, Lebogang Manyama, has opened up about the possibility of Kermit Erasmus joining the club.

Erasmus, a well-known forward in South African football, is currently a free agent after parting ways with Orlando Pirates at the end of the last season.

Erasmus’ Journey: From Pirates to Free Agency

Kermit Erasmus had rejoined Orlando Pirates in July 2022, marking his second stint with the club after his initial tenure from 2013 to 2016.

His return to the Buccaneers saw him feature in 36 matches over the past two seasons, contributing five goals and five assists.

Despite his efforts, Erasmus faced stiff competition for the striker position, contending with players like Zakhele Lepasa, Evidence Makgopa, and Tshegofatso Mabasa.

Manyama’s Dilemma: Friendship vs. Professionalism

As speculation grows about Erasmus possibly signing with Cape Town City, Manyama admits that his close relationship with the striker complicates his involvement in the negotiations.

Erasmus is no stranger to the Cape Town City setup, having played for the club between 2018 and 2020, where he netted 17 goals across various competitions.

Manyama’s Thoughts on Erasmus’ Potential Impact

When asked about Erasmus’ potential return, Manyama emphasized that the final decision lies with the club’s chairman, John Comitis, and head coach, Eric Tinkler.

He acknowledges Erasmus’ talent, having played alongside him since their youth days.

“Could he help us? Yes,” Manyama remarked, praising Erasmus’ quality when he’s in peak condition.

However, he also highlighted the unpredictable nature of football, mentioning that injuries and other factors could influence the need for Erasmus’ skills in the squad.

The Waiting Game: What Lies Ahead?

With the transfer window closing on September 20th, Manyama remains open to the idea of having Erasmus back at the club.

While he isn’t directly involved in the decision-making process due to his dual role as both a coach and a friend, he believes that a focused and fit Erasmus could be a game-changer for Cape Town City.

Whether or not the move materializes, only time will tell.
