In a recent event at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, Kaizer Chiefs marketing and commercial director Jessica Motaung shed light on the difficulties the club faces in establishing a women’s football team.
This discussion took place during the launch of the Twinning Project, a collaboration between the Glamour Boys and the Department of Correctional Services (DCS).
Twinning Project Launch
The Twinning Project, launched on September 4, 2024, aims to rehabilitate female offenders through football coaching and prepare them for reintegration into society.
During the event, female inmates were given the opportunity to engage in training and mentorship to enhance their physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Jessica Motaung on the Challenges
Motaung explained that setting up a women’s team comes with numerous obstacles.
She highlighted that while there is substantial interest in high-level football investments, foundational support for women’s football remains scarce.
“Many people are eager to invest in top-tier football but fall short when it comes to supporting the grassroots development of women’s football,” Motaung noted.
The Call for More Support
Fans across South Africa have been urging Kaizer Chiefs and their rivals, Orlando Pirates, to establish women’s teams, drawing inspiration from clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns, TS Galaxy, and Royal Am.
Motaung also touched on broader issues, such as infrastructure and investment challenges.
She pointed out that some sponsors are making strides, but there are still gaps in addressing the basic needs of women in football.
“There’s a clear need to understand what women require compared to men.
Women’s football needs to be developed with an emphasis on African women, which is crucial,” she added.
