Rand Water has informed residents about crucial maintenance work that will take place on its Palmiet System, which supplies water to Johannesburg Water’s Sandton and Midrand areas.
The work, scheduled for January 25-26, will focus on repairing a leak in the O2 pipeline.
To carry out these repairs, Rand Water will temporarily isolate the pipeline, resulting in a disruption to water supply in the affected regions.
Impacted Areas and Disruption Details
Johannesburg Water has confirmed that the maintenance will cause water shortages or low pressure in several areas.
These include the Sandton area and parts of Midrand, such as Klipfontein View, Allandale, President Park, Halfway House, and Diepsloot.
The disruption is expected to last for 24 hours, and residents in these locations are urged to prepare for temporary water shortages.
Tips for Residents to Prepare for the Disruption
As the scheduled maintenance approaches, Johannesburg Water is advising residents to stock up on water for essential daily needs.
They also suggest exploring alternative solutions, like rainwater harvesting, for non-drinking purposes.
Additionally, the utility is monitoring the situation closely and is prepared to deploy water tankers if needed, depending on the status of the water systems as the date of the maintenance nears.
Addressing Johannesburg’s Water Challenges
This maintenance comes at a time when Johannesburg is already grappling with ongoing water issues, exacerbated by illegal connections in informal settlements.
Johannesburg Water has revealed plans to tackle these illegal connections, which are contributing to significant water losses.
Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson for Johannesburg Water, stated, “We are ensuring that the water supply is maintained, and water tankers will be regularly refilled, but residents in informal settlements are urged to care for the water tanks to help sustain basic services.”
Community Cooperation Needed
In informal settlements, residents are encouraged to safeguard water tanks and report any issues with water supply promptly.
This cooperation is vital for maintaining an uninterrupted water service for the community.
Johannesburg Water continues to urge residents to work together in ensuring that water resources are used responsibly during these challenging times.
