Johannesburg residents brace for 8-hour power outages as City Power announces planned maintenance across more than 70 suburbs on April 2 and 3

Residents in over 70 Johannesburg suburbs are set to experience an 8-hour power outage this week.

The outages will occur on Wednesday, 2 April, and Thursday, 3 April 2025, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

City Power is urging all customers to keep their electricity supply points live during these times, as the power may be restored at any moment.

Purpose of the Outages

City Power has clarified that these scheduled outages are part of their ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade the electricity network.

The interruptions are necessary to carry out essential maintenance, which is essential for ensuring a better and more reliable service in the future.

The power outage will affect specific areas on each day.

On Wednesday, 2 April, the Florida Substation will be impacted, and the following suburbs will experience power cuts:

  • Florida North

  • Maraisburg

  • Florida View

  • Florida Hills

  • Florida Glen

  • Quellerina

  • Whiteridge

  • Industria North

On Thursday, 3 April, the Noordwyk Substation will be impacted, and the outage will affect a broader range of suburbs, including:

  • Country View

  • Savannah Hills

  • Development Bank of South Africa

  • Corporate Park South

  • Corporate Park North

  • Randjiespark (all roads)

  • Erand Gardens

  • Protea Hotel

  • Various roads and commercial parks in the area, including Vodaworld, Johnson & Johnson, and others

City Power recommends that residents in these areas prepare for the outage and take necessary precautions.

City Power’s Enforcement Actions in Johannesburg Inner City

In addition to these planned outages, City Power is taking a firm stand against illegal electricity connections in the Johannesburg inner city.

The #CutOffOperation, which is being carried out in collaboration with Joburg Water, targets businesses that are non-compliant with their electricity payments.

The operation aims to enforce compliance, recover unpaid revenue, and ensure the sustainability of essential services.

City Power’s General Manager, Arsenio Cossa, mentioned that some businesses, previously disconnected for non-payment, had illegally reconnected themselves.

The team is now going back to remove equipment from these properties, starting with the Johannesburg Hotel and other affected locations.

In a related event, a building in Fortesque Road, Yeoville, that owed over R6 million in unpaid electricity bills was also disconnected.

City Power has warned that businesses and residents who fail to settle their bills will face disconnection.
