Johannesburg City Council Extends Weekend Library Hours to Support Students Preparing for Final Exams Across Multiple Neighborhoods

With exam season fast approaching, students in Johannesburg are getting a much-needed helping hand.

The city’s libraries will be opening later on weekends, giving learners extra hours in peaceful, resource-packed spaces to hit the books.

This change starts from Saturday, 17 May and will run through until Sunday, 22 June 2025 — right through the heart of the exam period.

Longer Hours Provide Quiet Spaces for Focused Studying

From mid-May, eleven libraries around Joburg will stay open longer to support students preparing for their final exams.

On Saturdays, doors will open from 9 in the morning until 5 in the evening. Sundays won’t be far behind, with libraries welcoming visitors from 9 AM until 3 PM.

This extension means students can spend more time in a calm environment surrounded by all the study materials they need.

Libraries Spread Across the City to Support Diverse Communities

This initiative isn’t just concentrated in one part of the city.

Instead, it spans multiple neighborhoods to reach as many students as possible.

Up in the north, Randburg and Sandton libraries will join the extended hours.

In the west, students in Jabavu, Noordgesig, and Florida will also get more study time.

For those living in Diepsloot and Ivory Park, youth and community libraries are ready to offer a quiet place to study.

Inner City and Southern Libraries Join the Effort

Students studying in Johannesburg’s bustling inner city can take advantage of extra hours at Yeoville Library and the central Johannesburg City Library near Beyers Naude Square.

Meanwhile, learners in southern areas like Lenasia and Orange Farm are also included, with local libraries open to give them the quiet space needed to concentrate.

What to Expect During Extended Library Hours

It’s important to note that during these extended hours, the libraries will be strictly open for studying and reference purposes only.

Borrowing books or enjoying recreational activities won’t be available at these times — the focus is entirely on giving students the best possible environment to prepare for exams.
