Marshalltown, Johannesburg’s hijacked building fire has claimed the lives of at least 74 people. The fire started early on the morning of Thursday, August 31st, according to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services.

Diepkloof Mortuary in Soweto is where the families of the 73 victims of the Albert Street, Johannesburg CBD fire can go to identify their loved ones’ remains.

The 74 victims of the Central Business District fire have yet to be identified.
The morgue has received all 74 bodies, which include 12 children, 40 males, 24 women, and 10 people of unknown gender, according to a statement released by the health department of Gauteng.

Passports, asylum seeker documents, or letters from the individual’s native country are all acceptable forms of identification for non-citizens. The funeral home’s weekend hours are also 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The number of fatalities in the Johannesburg fire has risen to 73, and the cause is still unknown.
Building is being occupied illegally.

Authorities found that the illegal, five-story building was primarily inhabited by immigrants. Colleen Makhubele, the speaker of the Johannesburg City Council, said that NGOs were a roadblock to passing resolutions to reclaim stolen buildings.
