Jennifer Lopez joined Kamala Harris supporters on the campaign trail, making a powerful stand against recent anti-Puerto Rican remarks at a Las Vegas rally.
At the Craig Ranch Amphitheater, Lopez described the rally as the “most important stage” she had ever stood on, calling on Nevada voters to rally behind Harris and deliver a “Hollywood ending” to the election.
Speaking Out Against Disparaging Remarks
Without singling out anyone directly, Lopez made her feelings clear on a derogatory comment recently made about Puerto Rico at a rally in New York.
MAGA-aligned comedian Tony Hinchcliffe had described the U.S. territory as a “floating island of garbage.”
Lopez, visibly moved, declared, “It wasn’t just Puerto Ricans who felt offended; it was every Latino and every person of decent character.”
Proud of Her Puerto Rican Heritage
In an energized message to the crowd, Lopez celebrated her Puerto Rican heritage, exclaiming, “I am Puerto Rican. And yes, I was born here, and we are Americans.”
She quipped, “You can’t even spell American without Rican,” receiving loud applause from the audience, some of whom wore Halloween costumes.
Her statement underscored the unity she feels with her community, saying, “Whether you’re from Castle Hill in the Bronx or Sunrise Manor in East Las Vegas, we all want a world where our kids feel safe and valued by their president.”
Reflecting on Early Career Struggles and Progress
Lopez shared her own journey to success in Hollywood, remembering when she was limited to stereotypical roles.
“When I started in TV and film, I could only get roles as the maid or the loud-mouth Latina. But I knew I had more to offer,” she reflected, resonating with many in the crowd.
Lopez said, “A lot of people in this country feel the same way – knowing they are capable of more. Elections are about choosing leaders who support our potential, not those who stand in our way.”
Rallying the Latino Vote Amid Controversial Remarks
Lopez’s support for Harris has only intensified since the inflammatory remarks from Hinchcliffe, which have created backlash within the Latino community.
The comment, along with other racially charged jokes Hinchcliffe made, threatens to impact Trump’s popularity among Latino voters, especially in Nevada, where Latinos make up nearly 29% of the population.
The Stakes in Nevada
With Nevada emerging as a critical battleground, polls show the race tightening.
FiveThirtyEight’s Thursday prediction gave Harris a slim 51% chance to win Nevada, compared to Trump’s 49%.
The latest CNN poll showed Trump slightly ahead among likely voters, with 48% to Harris’s 47%.
Democrats in Nevada, however, may need to boost turnout, as early voting numbers have been leaning in Republicans’ favor, according to Rep. Dina Titus, who spoke at the rally.
Closing Message: “We’re Running Out of Time”
Jennifer Lopez’s support, along with other prominent Latino figures like Ricky Martin and Bad Bunny, is seen as part of a broader effort to energize the Latino vote in favor of Harris.
But with 42% of likely voters in Nevada reportedly having already cast their ballots, the window to sway remaining undecided voters is narrowing.
The rally ended on a note of urgency, as both Lopez and Harris’s team encouraged attendees to vote early and ensure every voice is heard in this closely contested election.
