James Hewitt Reflects on How Princess Diana Would Have Worried About the Rift Between Princes William and Harry During ITV Appearance in the UK

James Hewitt, who once had a relationship with Princess Diana, has spoken out about how Diana would have felt about the ongoing rift between her two sons, Princes William and Harry.

He believes Diana would be deeply concerned about the tension between them and would have done everything she could to help them reconcile.

Diana’s Concern for Her Sons’ Relationship

In an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Hewitt was asked by host Richard Madeley whether Diana would have been able to help William and Harry mend their relationship.

Hewitt responded thoughtfully, saying, “I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, and she’d do her best to try and get them together.”

He made it clear that Diana, as a mother, would have put everything into trying to heal the divide between her sons.

Hewitt Opens Up About His Role in Humanitarian Efforts

Hewitt, who is best known for his past relationship with Princess Diana, was on the show this morning to discuss his involvement in Operation Safedrop, an initiative delivering humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

While talking about his current work, he was also asked about mental health and how the conversation around it has evolved since Diana’s passing in 1997.

Progress in Mental Health Conversations

Reflecting on the progress made since Diana’s death, Hewitt shared that mental health discussions are now more open and accepted.

“I think we’ve progressed and it’s seemingly possible to talk about those kinds of problems now, in a way that I think is a good thing,” he explained, highlighting the positive shift in how mental health is approached.

Controversial Panorama Interview and BBC’s Actions

Hewitt also took the opportunity to speak about the controversial 1995 BBC Panorama interview with Princess Diana, for which the BBC has since issued an apology.

He described the way journalist Martin Bashir manipulated Diana as “appalling,” calling it a “stitch-up job.”

Hewitt expressed his outrage over how Diana had been misled, adding, “It was criminal activity, absolutely appalling.”

He went on to say that he strongly opposes bullying and arrogant behavior, emphasizing his disdain for such actions.

Reflecting on His Last Conversations with Diana

When asked about his last conversation with Diana, Hewitt revealed that it was shortly after the Panorama interview.

Madeley probed further, asking how their exchange went, to which Hewitt responded, “Distant, probably.”

He acknowledged that their relationship had been strained following the interview, adding that it had “created real problems.”

However, he emphasized his desire to move forward from that time, saying, “I’m trying to move on from that, and this is admittedly personal for me to try and move on and to help as best I can.”
