Serial child killer Lucy Letby, who has been sentenced to 14 life sentences, will be confined to HMP Low Newton in Durham.
This facility is also home to notorious murderer Joanna Dennehy.
However, to ensure Letby’s safety, she will initially be held in segregation to prevent attacks from fellow inmates.
Letby, aged 33, was handed a life sentence for her crimes, placing her alongside some of the country’s most heinous offenders.
Segregation and Shared Company

The exclusive list of individuals subjected to this punishment includes infamous figures like Myra Hindley and Rose West.
HMP Low Newton, the prison chosen to house Letby, has previously housed killers such as Rose West and Tracey Connelly.
In this unique institution, female inmates have the opportunity to interact with animals like sheep, goats, rabbits, and birds, which contributes to a calming atmosphere.
The Independent Monitoring Boards, an organization dedicated to humane treatment of prisoners, revealed this approach in a recent report.
Prison Environment and Notable Residents
HMP Low Newton is situated near the infamous HMP Frankland, where high-profile criminals like Ian Huntley, Wayne Couzens, and Levi Bellfield are held.
Previously, Letby was detained in HMP Bronzefield in Surrey and later moved to HMP New Hall in Wakefield for her trial.
Following her sentencing, she will be transferred to Low Newton, located in Brasside near Durham.
The prison system took similar measures with Rose West, moving her from HMP Bronzefield due to safety concerns.
Life Inside the Prison
Given Letby’s status as a multiple child killer, she is likely to face significant hostility from fellow inmates.
She is expected to begin her incarceration in the prison’s segregation unit, which can accommodate up to three women.
Letby’s mental state will be evaluated, and she may interact with therapists and healers as part of her rehabilitation.
The prison conditions have been critiqued for their limited regime, offering only an hour of outdoor time and half an hour for daily tasks.
If integrated into the general population, Letby might have access to amenities like the Rags to Riches shop for clothing.
Animal-Assisted Therapy and Rehabilitation
HMP Low Newton’s unique approach to rehabilitation includes animal-assisted therapy, allowing inmates to interact with sheep, goats, rabbits, and birds.
This has been found to have a calming effect on even the most challenging prisoners.
The prison is known for its ‘Primrose Project,’ which targets dangerous female offenders with severe personality disorders, making it a leader in modifying the behavior of such inmates.
Addressing Mental Health Risks
Lucy Letby remains a suicide risk, and the prison staff faces the challenge of ensuring her safety while avoiding excessive strain.
While a continuous suicide watch cannot be maintained indefinitely, the decision to lift this watch involves careful judgment and is not an exact science.
The Ministry of Justice and Prison Service have not provided comments regarding Letby’s specific sentence location.
