The Anambra State Police Command has arrested Chima Ofoeke in connection with the suspected murder of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday, saying the investigation began after the victim’s mother reported that her daughter had been missing since October 16, 2026.

The mother had contacted the Divisional Police Officer of the Umuchu Division after efforts to establish her daughter’s whereabouts proved unsuccessful.

Police Say Suspect Led Detectives to Victim’s Remains

According to the police, operatives acted on intelligence and worked alongside members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga to arrest Ofoeke, who was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.

The command said the suspect allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation to killing Umeorini following the breakdown of their relationship.

Police added that he subsequently led detectives to the location where her remains were discovered and recovered.

Suspect Allegedly Admits Killing Woman After Breakup

A video circulating on social media showed the suspect speaking about the circumstances surrounding the incident and saying that Umeorini had ended their relationship.

During the interrogation, he allegedly stated: “I killed her because she broke up with me. I killed her in my house in Uga, put her inside a bag and dumped her somewhere.”

The incident was also reported by social media influencer Chuks in a post on X, in which he alleged that the suspect killed the woman after she ended their relationship.

Resident Expresses Concern Over Alleged Killing

A resident of the area, who requested anonymity, expressed sadness over the incident and questioned the alleged motive behind the killing.

The resident said ending a relationship should not expose anyone to threats or violence, stressing that individuals have the right to leave relationships and make decisions about their future.

The resident also urged parents, friends, siblings and other relatives to take threats and controlling behaviour seriously.

The resident advised people who feel unsafe or face threats from someone refusing to accept the end of a relationship to inform trusted people, seek assistance and contact the appropriate authorities.

Police Commissioner Orders Further Investigation

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a comprehensive investigation.

According to the command, the investigation is intended to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property, urging members of the public to report missing persons and suspicious activities promptly to the appropriate authorities.

The command said further information would be released as the investigation progresses.
