Influential business leaders make bold move to invest in SA Rugby and reshape Springbok future

The ongoing saga surrounding SA Rugby’s commercial rights has taken yet another dramatic turn.

Following last year’s rejection of a private equity deal, a group of high-profile business leaders has now stepped forward with a new proposal to invest in the governing body and Springbok rugby.

Private Equity Deal Rejected, Tensions Rise

Late last year, SA Rugby (SARU) turned down a major investment offer from the overseas-based Ackerley Sports Group.

The proposal, which sought to acquire a stake in SA Rugby’s commercial rights, failed to secure the required 75% approval.

The fallout was intense, with several local rugby unions accusing SARU of mishandling the deal and prioritizing foreign interests over long-term financial growth.

Business Titans Unite for Local Investment

In response to the rejected deal, influential South African business figures—including Patrice Motsepe, Johann Rupert, Marco Massotti, and Johan le Roux—have now launched a fresh bid to buy into SA Rugby.

The group, which includes key shareholders from the Bulls, Sharks, and Stormers, aims to acquire a 20% stake in the organization’s commercial rights.

A Transparent Approach to Negotiation

According to News24, this investment proposal was formally submitted in a letter to SA Rugby President Mark Alexander, CEO Rian Oberholzer, and the executive committee on February 4.

In a move to maintain transparency, copies were also sent to all 14 professional rugby union presidents across South Africa.

The letter’s signatories include Stephen Saad and Marco Masotti (representing the Sharks), Jannie Durand and Johan van Zyl (on behalf of the Blue Bulls), and Johan le Roux and Bruce MacRobert (representing the Stormers).

These individuals have been designated as the lead negotiators if SA Rugby decides to proceed with discussions.

What’s Next for SA Rugby?

With local business heavyweights now at the table, SA Rugby faces another pivotal decision.

Will the governing body embrace this opportunity to secure local investment, or will internal conflicts continue to delay much-needed commercial growth?
