Bryan Kohberger’s upcoming trial for the murder of four University of Idaho students will now be held in Boise, following a judge’s decision to move the venue.
Initially, Kohberger, who is 29 years old, was set to stand trial in Moscow, where the murders occurred.
However, his defense team’s request for a change of venue has been granted.
New Location and Judge Assigned
The trial will take place at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise, Idaho’s capital.
The Idaho Supreme Court made this announcement on Thursday, also appointing District Judge Steven Hippler to oversee the case.
The trial is slated to begin on June 2 and is expected to continue until August 29, 2025.
Background of the Case
Kohberger, a former criminal justice student at Washington State University, faces four counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves.
Reasons for Venue Change
Judge John C. Judge, who approved the venue change, noted that the Latah County courthouse is not suited for a trial of this scale and duration.
He also mentioned the extensive negative publicity surrounding Kohberger as a factor in the decision.
Kohberger’s defense argued that the intense media coverage and emotional atmosphere in the tight-knit community of Moscow would make it impossible to find an unbiased jury.
Prosecution’s Argument
Prosecutors countered that any potential bias could be addressed by expanding the jury pool and conducting thorough questioning of potential jurors.
This is a developing story, so stay tuned for further updates on the case.
