On March 20, 2025, the world of surfing was rocked by the heartbreaking news of the death of Hugues Oyarzabal, one of the sport’s most renowned figures.
At just 39 years old, the French surfer passed away, and his parents confirmed that he died by suicide.
In a statement to The New York Times, they shared, “His physical and psychological suffering took its toll.
He has chosen to leave us to rediscover the peace and serenity he has been unable to find over the last few years.”
Struggles Behind the Public Persona
Oyarzabal’s family also revealed that he had been battling bipolar disorder, which likely played a significant role in his emotional and mental turmoil.
Despite his incredible achievements and success in the surfing world, his personal struggles were a heavy burden.
He leaves behind his 13-year-old daughter, Kailani, whom he had with his ex-wife, Jana Kondo. This tragic loss is not only felt by the surfing community but also by his loved ones.
Remembering a Surfing Pioneer
The French Surfing Federation expressed deep sorrow upon hearing the news, calling Oyarzabal one of the most talented French surfers ever.
A pioneer in the sport, he was known for taking on waves that many considered unsurfable and for popularizing the use of onboard camera videos.
Whether riding the giant waves of Parlementia or enjoying smaller, more local breaks, Oyarzabal was a versatile and highly skilled surfer.
His love for the ocean and surfing transcended borders, with Indonesia becoming like a second home to him.
Legacy of a Freesurfer
Oyarzabal’s legacy also includes his unique approach to surfing.
Unlike many competitive surfers, he considered himself a ‘freesurfer’—surfing for the pure joy of it, not for competition.
In a 2006 interview with Surf magazine, he shared his passion for the sport, saying, “I’m always looking to try different things.
I hate the idea of having a surf routine.” His dedication to the sport was evident, as he made surfing his full-time career from a young age.
Oyarzabal’s influence extended beyond the waves, with many surfers, including the legendary Kelly Slater, honoring him for his contributions to the sport.
His greatest achievement, however, may have been sharing his love for surfing with his daughter, Kailani, who now carries on his legacy.
