Simone Biles recently gave fans a rare glimpse into her pre-competition nerves and routine in a TikTok video. Filmed before her incredible all-around gold medal win on Thursday, the video was posted on Friday and shows Biles preparing for the big event.
With the caption, “Get ready with meeee for all around finals @ the Olympics,” Biles shared her experience with her followers.
As she was doing her makeup, Biles opened up about her anxiety and how she manages it.
“I am really nervous, that is to be expected,” she admitted. “I just had therapy this morning, so I’m feeling a little bit better.
I’ve worked so hard mentally to get to this point.” She confessed that the vault was the event she was most anxious about. “I don’t want to overpower,” she said.
Life Outside the Spotlight
Biles also shared how she has been avoiding the Olympic village in Paris to manage her anxiety. “I haven’t done much around the Olympic village,” she explained.
Her first day there was overwhelming; she was swarmed by fans asking for photos, which made her so anxious that she couldn’t stop shaking.
Since then, she’s preferred to stay in her room and only goes out to stock up on essentials.
Mental Health and Therapy
The gymnastics star has been open about her mental health struggles, particularly in high-pressure environments.
During the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, she withdrew from some events citing mental health issues, later revealing she experienced the ‘twisties,’ a disconnect between her mind and body.
In a June interview with NBC, Biles mentioned that seeing her therapist every Thursday is crucial for her, and she continued this practice leading up to her recent competitions.
Respect for Competitors
In a post-gold medal press conference, Biles praised Rebeca Andrade, the Brazilian gymnast who won silver.
“Let me just tell you, Rebeca is good,” Biles said.
“She is my top competitor, and we have similar scores.” She expressed excitement about competing alongside Andrade, noting her as a sweet and strong competitor.
A Surprise Confession
In a surprising twist, Biles also revealed she tried Botox for her 27th birthday in March but didn’t like the results. “I got baby Botox in my T-zone, and I did not like it,” she said.
She joked about how her eyebrow would randomly lift during practice, leading her to decide against trying it again.
Looking Ahead
Biles is set to compete again on Saturday for the vault as she aims for a third gold medal of the Games. She’ll also be back in action on Monday for the balance beam and floor exercise finals.
