Grammy Awards 2024: Davido and Nigerian Contingent Fall Short Despite High Hopes

Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, faced yet another setback in his quest for a Grammy Award, losing out in all three categories he was nominated for at the 66th Grammy Awards on Sunday night.

The three categories included Best Global Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best African Music Performance.

Nigerian Artists’ Grammy Prospects

Notably, Davido was not the only Nigerian artist vying for the prestigious music accolade.

Burna Boy, Olamide, Ayra Starr, and Asake were also nominated, but none secured an award during the ceremony.

The hopes of the Nigerian contingent were dashed, with the coveted Grammy accolades eluding each nominee.

South Africa’s Tyla Triumphs

On the brighter side for the African music scene, South Africa’s Tyla emerged victorious, clinching her first Grammy Award in the Best Global Music Performance category.

Tyla, known for her breakthrough hit ‘Water’ in 2023, surpassed a lineup that included heavyweights like Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Ayra Starr.

Davido’s Optimism and Grammy Recognition

Prior to the Grammy Awards ceremony, Davido had expressed optimism about his chances, particularly in the Best African Music Performance category.

In an interview with Billboard’s Tetris Kelly, he spoke about the significance of having an African music category at the global music awards.

He highlighted that the inclusion of such a category was long overdue, acknowledging the contributions of iconic figures like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade.

Davido reflected on the historical importance, stating, “If there was an African category years ago, a lot of people would have had the opportunity to be recognized by the Grammy. Finally, at least it is happening now.”

Grammy Night Highlights and Winners

While Davido and his Nigerian counterparts faced disappointment, the Grammy Awards showcased victories for other artists.

Tyla’s triumph, early wins for Barbie the Album, Billie Eilish, Finneas, Chris Stapleton, Killer Mike, Lil Durk, J. Cole, and Victoria Monét marked significant moments in the diverse array of musical achievements celebrated at the 66th Grammy Awards.
