Several governors made their presence felt at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Tuesday, as they gathered to witness and monitor the election of the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly.
Notable among them were the Governors of Kogi, Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Imo, Kwara, and Lagos, who were spotted in the Senate Chamber.
Additionally, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, and the National Secretary, Iyiola Omisore, were also present during the event.
Governors Advocate for Fairness:
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had previously announced his intention to join his colleagues at the Senate Chamber, emphasizing their aim to ensure justice and fairness in the selection of the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio Emerges as Senate President:
In a significant turn of events, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and ex-Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, emerged as the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio, who was the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured victory in the voting process conducted by the lawmakers.
His opponent, Abdulaziz Yari, was defeated in the race.
Akpabio garnered an impressive 63 votes, while Yari managed to accumulate 46 votes.
The election of the Senate President at the 10th National Assembly witnessed the presence of several governors and party officials, who gathered to observe the proceedings.
The emergence of Godswill Akpabio as the Senate President marks a significant milestone, as he garnered overwhelming support from senators-elect.
The event signifies a new leadership direction for the National Assembly and sets the stage for future legislative activities.
