Gauteng Faces Severe Weather Challenges as Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Continue to Disrupt the Province

Gauteng is facing significant weather challenges this week as heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms continue to impact the province.

The ongoing adverse conditions have prompted emergency services to prepare for possible incidents like flash flooding.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for additional storms throughout the coming days, raising concerns across the region.

Johannesburg Issues Warning and Mobilizes Emergency Services

On Monday, the City of Johannesburg issued an Orange Level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms.

In response, the city’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) activated Disaster Management Monitoring teams across all seven regions.

Their focus is on vulnerable areas, particularly informal settlements at high risk of flooding.

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi reassured residents that the emergency response teams are fully prepared to handle any emergencies that may arise.

“We are on standby to respond to any life-threatening situations,” Mulaudzi said.

“Residents are encouraged to call the Emergency Services Call Centre at 011 375 5911 if they are in need of urgent help.”

Additionally, the city has cautioned drivers to stay vigilant, advising them to avoid flooded roads, low-lying bridges, and river streams during the storm.

Safety Tips for Residents and Drivers Amid the Storms

With thunderstorms expected to affect not only Gauteng but also parts of Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and North West, SAWS has issued warnings for heavy rain, hail, damaging winds, and intense lightning.

In light of these hazardous conditions, Santam’s Head of Personal Underwriting, Marius Kemp, highlighted the importance of driving safely during these storms.

Kemp recommends drivers reduce their speed, increase their following distance, and keep an eye on local weather updates from radio stations.

It’s also important to avoid areas prone to flooding and to keep headlights on, but avoid using high beams.

Emergency teams are also concentrating efforts on communities that are most vulnerable to flooding, such as those near riverbanks or in low-lying regions.

The Johannesburg Aquatic Rescue Unit is on standby to help with any water-related emergencies.

The SAWS has confirmed that thunderstorms will continue to affect Gauteng throughout the week, possibly escalating the disruption in affected areas.

The severe weather calls for heightened vigilance from residents, and authorities are urging everyone to adhere to safety measures and prepare for sudden changes in weather conditions.
