From Preparation to Podium? Junior Springboks Gear Up for U20 Rugby Championship Debut

In July 2023, the creation of an exciting new U20 Rugby Championship was confirmed.

This competition mirrors the senior Rugby Championship and aims to provide a challenging platform for young players.

Tournament Format and Schedule

The inaugural season will be hosted on Australia’s Gold Coast.

The format features a round-robin structure, with each of the four participating teams – South Africa, Argentina, New Zealand, and Australia – playing each other once over a three-week period.

The team with the most points after six matches will be crowned champion.

Junior Springboks’ Fixtures

The Junior Springboks will commence the tournament on Thursday, May 2nd, with a highly anticipated clash against New Zealand at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Erasmus Welcomes New Competition

Rassie Erasmus, former Director of Rugby for SA Rugby, expressed his enthusiasm for the U20 Rugby Championship’s potential impact on junior development.

He highlighted the lack of consistent quality competition for the Junior Springboks in the past and believes this new tournament will address that issue.

Erasmus emphasized the importance of regular exposure to high-level competition for player development.

Bafana Nhleko: Preparation and Excitement

Junior Springbok head coach Bafana Nhleko provided an update on the team’s preparation.

He highlighted the demanding training program and the players’ positive response in learning and applying the required skills.

Nhleko sees the U20 Championship as a crucial opportunity for playing quality opposition, testing combinations, and finalizing team selection before the World Rugby U20 Championship.

He believes the tournament will bridge the gap between preparation and the World Championship and expressed excitement about the upcoming experience in Australia.
