Strictly Come Dancing, one of the most beloved entertainment shows, is once again facing a wave of allegations. Recent investigations have revealed disturbing claims of bullying by celebrities and dancers against low-paid production staff.
Fifteen current and former members of the production crew have described the work environment as “toxic.”
Celebrities were reported to lose their tempers at junior staff members, with one incident involving a star’s tirade that left a worker covered in spittle. Additionally, allegations surfaced about a male dancer’s chauvinistic behavior towards women.
Many staff members were reluctant to raise concerns due to fears of being blacklisted in the industry.
This atmosphere of intimidation was underscored by previous explosive claims from former contestants Amanda Abbington, Zara McDermott, and Laura Whitmore, leading the BBC to launch a misconduct investigation.
BBC director general Tim Davie has issued an apology to the contestants, emphasizing that competitiveness should not cross into unacceptable behavior.
Despite the serious allegations, BBC Studios stated it “does not recognize” these claims.
Numerous current and former staff members, choosing to remain anonymous, have come forward. Oscar, who joined the show at 18, described a culture particularly toxic for junior staff.
He recalled being berated by a celebrity to the point of physical distress and ultimately left the show without filing a complaint.
Junior Staff Suffer in Silence
Anika, a former runner, shared her experiences of dealing with abusive behavior from a male dancer who has since left the show.
She described an environment filled with shouting and demeaning treatment towards women.
Similarly, Jack, another runner, mentioned that lower-paid workers were told they should feel lucky to be part of the show.
Jane, a former TV package editor on Strictly, emphasized that while the suffering of celebrities is significant, the crew faces a much larger problem.
She compared her role to that of a therapist, helping crew members cope with verbal abuse from some dancers.
Not everyone corroborates these allegations.
A choreographer currently working on the show stated they had never witnessed such behavior and praised the dancers and staff for their kindness and respect.
High-Profile Accusations
The scandal first came to light when Sherlock actor Amanda Abbington accused Giovanni Pernice of bullying and harsh training, leading to PTSD. Pernice, who denies the accusations, is not returning to the show amid the ongoing investigation.
Former Love Island contestant Zara McDermott also spoke out about her partner Graziano Di Prima’s abusive behavior, which led to his dismissal from the show.
Upcoming Series
Despite the turmoil, the next series of Strictly is set to feature new celebrities, including reality stars Tasha Ghouri and Pete Wicks, Welsh opera singer Wynne Evans, singer and actress Toyah Willcox, and blind comedian Chris McCausland.
