Legendary jockey Frankie Dettori is recovering in hospital after suffering multiple injuries in a serious road accident in Suffolk.
The 55-year-old has confirmed he is in significant pain but remains grateful for the medical care he has received as he begins what is expected to be a lengthy recovery.
His wife, Catherine Dettori, has been by his side since the incident, with the racing icon also sharing a hospital photograph showing the couple together.
Dettori Describes His Condition After the Crash
Dettori released a personal statement thanking supporters for the flood of well wishes that followed news of the accident.
He also praised the emergency responders and hospital staff who treated him after the collision.
The former champion jockey revealed that he suffered several broken ribs and admitted he is “very sore.”
While acknowledging the extent of his injuries, he expressed optimism about returning once he has fully recovered, saying he now intends to focus entirely on rest and rehabilitation.
Collision Left Vehicle Spinning and Overturned
According to a statement issued by Dettori’s management team, the accident occurred in Newmarket when another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car he was driving.
The impact reportedly caused the vehicle to spin before flipping over, leaving Dettori with multiple fractures.
Medical examinations later confirmed he had sustained several broken ribs along with a fractured thumb.
Doctors continue to monitor his condition, with further scans and observation underway as they assess the full extent of his injuries.
Family Requests Privacy During Recovery
Representatives for Dettori said the jockey is deeply appreciative of everyone involved in the emergency response, including paramedics, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
The management team added that his immediate priority is recovering from his injuries and respectfully requested privacy while he remains in hospital.
They indicated that no additional updates will be provided until there is significant progress in his condition.
Planned Return to Racing Now in Doubt
Before the accident, Dettori had been preparing for a highly anticipated return to competitive riding in September at the Betfred Leger Legends race in Doncaster.
The charity event was expected to mark his first appearance in the saddle since officially stepping away from professional racing earlier this year.
Given the seriousness of his injuries, however, participation in the event now appears increasingly uncertain.
Dettori ended his competitive career in February with a winning ride in Brazil, concluding a remarkable 35-year journey that established him as one of horse racing’s greatest figures.
Financial Challenges Overshadowed His Final Racing Years
Although his achievements on the track made him one of racing’s highest-earning jockeys, Dettori’s final years in the sport were also marked by significant financial difficulties.
He has been involved in a lengthy dispute with the UK’s tax authorities, explaining previously that he had been attempting to resolve financial issues he believed stemmed from advice provided by a former adviser.
Despite those efforts, he was declared bankrupt, and insolvency proceedings later continued after concerns were raised over incomplete disclosure of assets.
During a court hearing earlier this year, trustees overseeing the bankruptcy alleged that several overseas properties and valuable assets—including luxury watches, an extensive wine collection and substantial investments—had not initially been declared.
The court subsequently extended the bankruptcy period while investigations continued.
Another Serious Escape in a Career Marked by Danger
Thursday’s crash is the latest in a series of life-threatening incidents Dettori has survived throughout his career.
In 2000, he narrowly escaped death when a light aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from Newmarket.
The accident claimed the life of pilot Patrick Mackey, while Dettori and fellow jockey Ray Cochrane managed to escape the wreckage.
Cochrane later described the terrifying moments leading up to the crash, recalling how the aircraft became unstable before overturning and catching fire.
He said Dettori suffered significant injuries and was covered in blood as they fought to escape before flames engulfed the aircraft.
One of Horse Racing’s Most Decorated Champions
Despite the setbacks he has faced both on and off the track, Dettori remains one of the most celebrated figures in international horse racing.
Across a career spanning more than three decades, he rode over 3,300 winners and secured a place in sporting history with his unforgettable “Magnificent Seven” achievement at Ascot Racecourse in 1996, when he won all seven races on the day’s card—an accomplishment that remains one of the sport’s most iconic moments.
As he recovers from his latest accident, the racing community continues to send messages of support while awaiting news on whether one of the sport’s greatest jockeys will be able to make another return to the saddle.
