Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer slams club’s transfer move after Scott McTominay finds success in Serie A

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed his confusion over Manchester United’s decision to part ways with a player who has found success since leaving the club.

The former United manager, who currently oversees Besiktas in Turkey, was especially vocal about the sale of Scott McTominay, a player he believes could have played a significant role at Old Trafford.

Struggles Continue for Manchester United

This season has been another challenging one for Manchester United.

Currently languishing in 15th place in the Premier League, the club has struggled to find consistent form, first under Erik ten Hag and now with Ruben Amorim at the helm.

Although United’s hopes for a Europa League victory are still alive—thanks to a 3-0 lead in their semi-final clash against Athletic Bilbao—captain Harry Maguire has been quick to downplay the importance of any potential European silverware in salvaging their season.

A Summer of Change for United

As summer approaches, Manchester United is gearing up for another rebuilding phase.

Despite a £200 million investment in new signings last year, only Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven have arrived under Amorim’s leadership.

The club’s roster has seen several players leave, some of whom have gone on to thrive at their new clubs.

One of those players is Scott McTominay, a figure who earned a loyal fanbase during his time at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer Questions McTominay’s Departure

Reflecting on McTominay’s exit, Solskjaer couldn’t understand why the club let him go.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Solskjaer shared his admiration for McTominay and his midfield partner Fred, saying, “Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100 percent.”

He further remarked, “How you can sell Scott is beyond me.”

McTominay, who played 255 times for United, was often a key part of Solskjaer’s midfield, alongside Fred.

Despite his commitment and work ethic, McTominay never truly managed to secure a permanent place in the squad or fully win over United’s fans.

His departure to Napoli for £26 million in the summer has proven to be a wise move, as he has flourished in Serie A, scoring 12 goals in 33 appearances and becoming a fan favorite at the club.

Fred’s Move and Solskjaer’s Leadership Praise

Similarly, Fred, who also formed a midfield partnership with McTominay, found himself moving on from Manchester United.

The Brazilian midfielder played 213 times for the club between 2018 and 2023 before joining Fenerbahce in Turkey, where he now works under former United manager Jose Mourinho.

Despite his consistent efforts, Fred never managed to win the complete trust of the United fanbase, often losing out to players like Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in central midfield roles.

Fernandes, now the captain of Manchester United, has reached out to Solskjaer since his departure.

Solskjaer, who had appointed Harry Maguire as United’s captain during his reign, praised Fernandes’ leadership qualities, calling both him and Maguire “top human beings.”

The two players, along with Victor Lindelof, are among the few former United stars who have kept in touch with Solskjaer.

Solskjaer’s Success with Besiktas

On the managerial front, Solskjaer has found success with Besiktas.

Since taking over in January, he has guided the Turkish club to fourth place in the Super Lig, with a chance to rise to third place if they secure a win against Fenerbahce.

Solskjaer’s Besiktas have won six of their 12 league matches under his leadership, showcasing his ability to navigate the challenges of a new environment.

Despite the struggles at Manchester United, Solskjaer’s career continues to evolve, and he remains a figure of admiration among fans and players alike.
