Floyd Shivambu Opens Up About Leaving EFF to Join the MK Party

Former EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu recently confirmed that most of his fellow leaders in the Economic Freedom Fighters knew of his decision to leave and join the MK Party. Shivambu, who co-founded the EFF with Julius Malema in 2013, officially departed from the party on August 15 and has since stepped into the role of national convenor for the MK Party.

Shivambu Reveals Malema Was Unaware of His Exit Plan

In a revealing conversation on Sizwe Mpofu Walsh’s podcast, Shivambu disclosed that Julius Malema was kept in the dark about his departure plans. He explained, “Most leaders in the EFF were aware that I was joining the MK Party. Some even asked me not to tell the president. Malema had no idea, and I didn’t feel it was necessary to inform him directly.” Shivambu added that some leaders appeared visibly emotional during his resignation announcement, despite knowing his intentions all along.

Reflecting on His Decision to Leave the EFF

Shivambu defended his choice to leave the party he had a major hand in creating, clarifying that his decision was neither sudden nor impulsive. He emphasized that his move wasn’t personal toward Malema but rather a strategic, well-considered choice. “I had to take a bold, perhaps wise, decision to step away from the EFF, an organization I was integral in building,” he said. Shivambu underscored his significant role in establishing the EFF’s identity, values, and core principles, including the party’s name, leadership titles, and foundational documents.

Were Shivambu and Malema Truly Friends?

Shivambu further clarified the nature of his relationship with Malema, describing it as purely political. “Working together didn’t mean we had a personal relationship,” he noted, stressing that their association was centered around their shared political objectives within the EFF.

When Shivambu publicly announced his resignation, Malema initially stated that, according to party rules, members who resign to join other parties cannot return to the EFF. However, Malema suggested that Shivambu might be a unique exception, given his role as co-founder and their longstanding political ties. “The day you decide to return, the door is open,” Malema had said initially.

Malema Changes His Stance on Shivambu’s Return

In a recent SABC News interview, Malema altered his position, indicating that his fellow EFF leaders had convinced him to close the door on Shivambu’s return permanently. This decision marked a significant shift, underscoring that the EFF would not welcome back members who had moved on to other political affiliations.

What Lies Ahead for Floyd Shivambu?

As Shivambu embarks on this new chapter with the MK Party, questions arise about the future of his political journey. Will he remain with the MK Party for the long term?
