Governor’s Warning and Past Efforts
In a startling revelation from April 2021, the former Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, had warned of the presence of Boko Haram terrorists in Kaure village, located in the Shiroro local government area of the North-Central Nigerian state.
The shocking disclosure was made during Bello’s visit to the Internally Displaced People’s Camp at the IBB Primary School near the Emir of Minna’s Palace.
Bello reiterated his previous warning that Boko Haram had hoisted their flag in Kaure, merely hours away from the nation’s capital.
He expressed concerns over the dire situation during the visit to the IDP camp, hastily established to shelter the nearly 5000 villagers displaced by bandit raids in Shiroro and Munya local government areas.
Boko Haram Control and Human Rights Violations
The former governor disclosed that Boko Haram fighters had not only taken over the territory but had also forcefully seized the wives of some villagers, assigning them to themselves.
He stated, “I am confirming that there are Boko Haram elements here in Niger state, here in Kaure.”
National Security Threat and Coordination Call
Bello emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the need for a more coordinated military response.
He expressed concern that even Abuja might not be safe, urging the federal government to take decisive action. The governor urged collective efforts, stating, “All hands must be on deck. It is not a fight for Niger state alone.”
Comparisons to Sambisa and Urgent Appeal
Drawing parallels to the Boko Haram stronghold in Sambisa, Bello warned that Kaure, being just a two-hour drive from Abuja, posed an imminent threat.
He urged the federal government to act promptly, stating, “I hope the time has come for a more coordinated military activity to take place.” The former governor underscored the urgency, stressing that “nobody is safe anymore, not even those in Abuja.”
