The National Weather Service has issued frost advisories and freeze warnings for parts of nine states as colder air moves across the northeastern United States.

The alerts are in effect from late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and cover portions of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Most of the advisories begin between 11pm and midnight, with some remaining in effect until 9am Wednesday.

Temperatures Expected to Drop Into the 20s and 30s

Forecast temperatures across the affected areas range from approximately 25F to 36F.

The lowest temperatures are expected in central interior Cumberland and Androscoggin counties in Maine, including Lewiston and Auburn.

The cold weather is being associated with air moving south from Canada. A high-pressure system is directing winds into New England from the west and northwest.

Maine Among the Coldest Areas

Maine is expected to experience some of the lowest temperatures during the overnight period.

A freeze warning covers central interior Cumberland and Androscoggin counties from midnight until 8am Wednesday.

Southern Maine and central and southern New Hampshire are under frost advisories during the same period, with overnight lows expected to reach about 31F.

A separate advisory covers interior Hancock and central Washington counties in Maine from 2am to 8am, where temperatures are forecast to fall to approximately 33F.

Massachusetts Faces Freeze Warnings

In Massachusetts, Franklin and Hampshire counties are under a freeze warning from 11pm Tuesday until 9am Wednesday.

Temperatures in those counties are expected to range between 26F and 32F.

Additional frost advisories cover areas including Springfield, Worcester and Lowell, where temperatures could drop to between 31F and 36F.

New York Has Multiple Advisories

Several areas of New York are also included in the weather alerts.

Northern Saratoga County, Washington County and southeastern Warren County face a freeze warning from midnight until 8am Wednesday, with temperatures expected to reach 32F or lower.

Frost advisories have also been issued for the Capital District, mid-Hudson Valley and southern Taconics, where overnight lows are forecast between 33F and 36F.

Orange and Putnam counties have an advisory from 11pm Tuesday until 9am Wednesday, with temperatures expected to fall to around 32F.

Vermont Communities Included in Advisory

Parts of Vermont’s Champlain Valley are among the areas covered by frost advisories.

The advisory also extends into northeastern New York and runs from midnight until 7am Wednesday, with temperatures expected to fall to approximately 33F.

Burlington, Middlebury, Plattsburgh and Ticonderoga are among the communities in the affected region.

Connecticut and Rhode Island Prepare for Frost

Northern and inland parts of Connecticut, including Hartford, are under frost advisories.

Temperatures are generally expected to range from 31F to 36F. Most of the advisories run from 11pm Tuesday until 9am Wednesday, while Litchfield County’s advisory begins at midnight and continues until 8am.

In Rhode Island, northwestern Providence County, western Kent County and Washington County are under frost advisories from 11pm until 9am.

Temperatures in those areas are forecast to range from 31F to 36F.

Pennsylvania and New Jersey Also Affected

Frost advisories have been issued for parts of northeastern and central Pennsylvania, as well as the Poconos.

The advisories are in effect from 11pm Tuesday until 9am Wednesday. Temperatures could fall into the mid-30s, with lows around 33F expected in Carbon and Monroe counties.

In New Jersey, Sussex County is under a frost advisory during the same overnight period. Temperatures are expected to reach about 33F in communities including Newton.

Meteorologists Identify Areas With Greater Freeze Risk

AccuWeather meteorologists have described the incoming weather as the coldest air of the season so far for parts of the Northeast.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Brett Anderson said the greatest risk of a damaging freeze is expected from northeastern Pennsylvania through the Adirondacks of New York and into the interior of New England.

The combination of cold Canadian air and overnight conditions is expected to produce the most significant frost and freeze threat in inland areas.

Residents Advised to Protect Sensitive Vegetation

AccuWeather has advised residents in affected areas to take precautions to protect plants from the cold.

Sensitive vegetation can be moved indoors where possible or covered before temperatures fall overnight.

The advisories are primarily focused on the overnight and early-morning hours, when temperatures are expected to reach their lowest levels across the affected parts of the Northeast.
