Cristiano Ronaldo has launched an extraordinary defence of his conduct during Portugal’s latest international camp, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word while apologising to his national-team teammates for walking away from the squad.
The veteran forward issued a lengthy statement explaining the events that led to his departure, insisting that his decision was driven by what he regarded as a serious breakdown of trust rather than a disagreement over playing time.
Ronaldo said he had previously promised to explain what happened and has now provided his version of events in detail.
Ronaldo Says His International Future Was Already in Question
According to Ronaldo, he had already prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese public following the 2026 World Cup because he had been considering ending his international career.
He said, however, that the president of the Portuguese Football Federation later urged him to reconsider and asked for his opinion on the appointment of the next national-team coach.
Ronaldo said he supported the choice of Jorge Jesus and was genuinely pleased when the coach was eventually appointed.
He also claimed that his initial discussions with Jesus were positive, with the manager telling him that he was an important part of the team’s plans.
Jesus Allegedly Presented Ronaldo With a Specific Plan
Ronaldo said his first face-to-face meeting with Jesus took place at Cidade do Futebol while his club was conducting its pre-season preparations.
During that meeting, Ronaldo claimed that Jesus outlined a plan for managing his involvement with Portugal.
The forward said he was told he would play the opening and final matches of the camp, while other matches would involve changes designed to manage his physical condition.
Jesus also reportedly suggested that Ronaldo could remain in Portugal rather than travel for the matches in Norway and Denmark.
Ronaldo rejected the proposal, saying he did not believe it would set the right example for him to remain captain while the rest of the squad travelled.
Norway Match Became the Breaking Point
Ronaldo said the disagreement intensified on the day Portugal played Norway.
He claimed that he had been following a physical recovery programme and believed he was not expected to play.
However, according to Ronaldo, an assistant approached him during lunch and said Jesus wanted to speak with him.
The striker said Jesus then asked whether he was fit enough to play for approximately 30 minutes.
Ronaldo agreed, despite saying that the request was outside the original physical plan that had been established for him.
He subsequently warmed up during the second half but was never introduced.
For Ronaldo, that was a breach of the agreement he believed had been reached.
Ronaldo Admits He Should Have Greeted the Fans
Following the match, Ronaldo said his only priority was seeing Portugal secure victory and then withdrawing from the situation.
He acknowledged that he failed to greet the supporters after the game.
The forward described that as his own mistake and issued an apology to Portuguese fans, as well as supporters who had travelled to see him.
Ronaldo stressed that his frustration did not justify failing to acknowledge the crowd.
Private Meeting With Jesus Failed to Resolve the Dispute
Two days later, Ronaldo said he met with Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho to discuss what had happened.
According to Ronaldo, the meeting was frank and ultimately produced an agreement about how the controversy would be addressed publicly.
He claimed that Jesus agreed to explain during a press conference that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time and that the original plan had been proposed by the coach.
Ronaldo also said Jesus acknowledged that asking him to warm up without eventually putting him on the field had been a mistake.
The two men allegedly ended the meeting on good terms, with Ronaldo saying Jesus even asked him for a hug.
Ronaldo Accuses Jesus of Changing His Tone
The situation took another turn during the subsequent press conference.
Ronaldo claimed that Jesus’ public comments were completely different from the tone used during their private conversation.
He said the coach’s approach appeared aggressive and reflected an attitude of authority that had not been present when the two spoke privately.
Ronaldo said this represented a second occasion on which he believed Jesus had broken his word.
He therefore decided to leave the national-team camp.
Former Captain Accepts Responsibility for Walking Out
Despite his anger at the coach, Ronaldo acknowledged that leaving the squad was his responsibility.
He apologised directly to his teammates, saying he should not have abandoned the camp even though he believed the trust between himself and the coach had been broken.
The Portugal captain argued that remaining with the squad would have been more damaging because he no longer felt useful within the group.
He said he had also told the federation president and Jesus that if they no longer wanted him in the team, they only needed to be honest with him.
According to Ronaldo, both men assured him that his place remained with the national team.
Ronaldo Says He Has Never Interfered With Coaches
The forward strongly rejected any suggestion that he attempted to dictate tactical or selection decisions during his international career.
Ronaldo said that over almost 25 years with Portugal, he had never interfered with the technical decisions of a manager.
He insisted that he accepts decisions made by coaches, whether he agrees with them or not.
His objection, he said, was specifically related to what he regarded as a promise being broken.
Federation Should Punish Him, Ronaldo Says
In one of the most striking parts of his statement, Ronaldo said the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him for leaving the camp.
He argued that his status as captain should be considered an aggravating factor rather than a reason for leniency.
Ronaldo said he understands that rules must apply equally to every player, regardless of reputation or achievements.
He therefore accepted that his actions should have consequences.
Ronaldo Rejects the Idea That His Farewell Is Imminent
Ronaldo also addressed speculation that the latest dispute could lead to an immediate farewell from international football.
He said there had been talk of the federation organising a dignified send-off for him, but insisted that he was not thinking about his national-team future solely in terms of a farewell ceremony.
According to Ronaldo, he wants to compete for Portugal rather than simply receive a ceremonial goodbye.
He said that if he remains physically fit and continues performing for his club, he intends to make himself available for Portugal once any suspension has been served.
Ronaldo Recalls Playing After His Father’s Death
To underline his commitment to the national team, Ronaldo recalled a particularly painful moment from his career.
He said that when he learned of his father’s death while with Portugal, he chose to remain with the squad until the following day’s match was completed.
Ronaldo said he did for his country what he would never have done for a club.
That experience, he suggested, reflected how deeply he values representing Portugal.
International Career May Not Be Over Yet
Despite the extraordinary dispute with Jesus, Ronaldo’s statement does not amount to a definitive retirement announcement.
Instead, he has left the door open to returning to Portugal once he is eligible and physically fit.
The forward concluded by insisting that his account represented the truth as he experienced it.
For now, the fallout leaves Portugal facing difficult questions over the relationship between its long-serving captain and its new head coach, while Ronaldo’s future with the national team remains uncertain.
