The President’s office confirmed that his battle with Alzheimer’s disease came to a close.

In a statement released on Monday, the current President of Finland, Sauli Niinisto, expressed deep sadness over the news of Martti Ahtisaari’s passing.

Ahtisaari had left an indelible mark during his tenure as President from 1994 to 2000.

Global Peacemaker and Nobel Laureate

Martti Ahtisaari’s illustrious career extended over four decades, during which he played a pivotal role in negotiating peace agreements around the world, from Indonesia to Kosovo and Namibia.

His dedication to global peace efforts was internationally recognized, culminating in the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to him in 2008.

Peacemaking Achievements

Ahtisaari’s diplomatic expertise was exemplified by his successful mediation in the 2005 reconciliation between the Indonesian government and Free Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels.

This significant achievement put an end to a thirty-year-long conflict that had claimed the lives of around 15,000 individuals.

During the negotiations, Ahtisaari was described as resolute, yet he displayed a sense of humor and warmth in personal interactions.

He acknowledged his patience and determination as key attributes contributing to his success as a peacemaker.

Efforts in Kosovo

Martti Ahtisaari also played a critical role in guiding Kosovo toward independence, although his intensive efforts did not result in an agreement with Serbia before Kosovo declared unilateral independence in 2008.

Battling Alzheimer’s and Withdrawal from Public Life

In September 2021, Martti Ahtisaari retired from public life due to his struggle with Alzheimer’s disease, marking the end of an illustrious career that left an indelible impact on global diplomacy and peace negotiations.
