On a pleasant Monday, Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka paid a courtesy visit to the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, at the Government House in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The governor expressed his delight and shared photos of the esteemed professor’s visit on his social media.
Prof. Soyinka recently celebrated his 89th birthday, and during the visit, Governor Abiodun expressed his gratitude for the professor’s counsel and support.
The meeting was particularly significant as Prof. Soyinka is not only a Nobel Laureate in Literature but also a patriotic Nigerian and a proud son of Ogun State.
Soyinka Defends Davido’s Controversial Music Video
In another development, Prof. Wole Soyinka came to the defense of Nigerian singer Davido, also known as David Adeleke, regarding a controversial music video the artist had posted on his social media platforms.
The music video featured Logos Olori, an artist signed to Davido’s label, and it sparked controversy due to its depiction of people dressed in white clothes engaged in prayers similar to the Islamic tradition before transitioning into dancing.
This video offended some Nigerian Muslims, particularly in the Northern region, who demanded its removal and an apology from Davido. Although the artist eventually deleted the video after 48 hours, the demands for an apology persisted.
However, Prof. Soyinka, in a statement released on Tuesday, defended Davido, stating that he did not owe Muslims an apology.
Soyinka pointed out that in the past, former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai, had made offensive comments against Christians but was never asked to tender an apology.
By drawing this parallel, the literary icon emphasized that it was essential to maintain consistency and fairness in addressing sensitive issues.
