Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka Accuses Supporters of Peter Obi of Fascism

…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. Nigerian Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has strongly criticized the supporters of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, known as the “Obidients,” for their actions during the 2023 general election.

Soyinka labeled them as fascist while speaking at the launch of his book, “The Putin Files: Excursions Around The Ideology Of Pain.”

EndSARS Protest as an Example of Truth-Driven Struggle:

During the event, Soyinka responded to a question from lawyer and poet Ogaga Ifowodo, explaining why he referred to the Obidients as fascists.

He cited the 2020 EndSARS protest as an example of a movement fueled by genuine truth.

Soyinka expressed his support for the EndSARS protest and revealed that he had even addressed some of the protesters before leaving Lagos for Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.

Distinguishing EndSARS from the Obidient Movement:

Soyinka emphasized that the EndSARS protest differed significantly from the Obidient Movement, as the latter aimed to mobilize Nigerian youths to defend an untruth.

Drawing a parallel, he likened the actions of the Obidients to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who allegedly encouraged violence against innocent members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by claiming he was cheated out of an election.

Soyinka further highlighted that some individuals had been plotting to steer the country towards an interim government long before the election took place.

Critique of Obidient Actions:

In his criticism, Soyinka remarked that those who thought they were being radical by supporting the Obidient Movement were, in fact, foolish and unwittingly playing into the hands of others.

He suggested that their actions aligned with a preconceived script rather than promoting genuine change.

Conclusion

Professor Wole Soyinka’s condemnation of the Obidients, the supporters of Peter Obi during the 2023 election, as fascists, reflects his belief that their actions were misguided and contrary to the pursuit of truth.

By contrasting their approach with the successful and truth-driven EndSARS protest, Soyinka aims to shed light on the dangers of defending untruths and following scripts that hinder genuine progress.
