A proposal supported by Penny Mordaunt would mandate “National Service” for every 16-year-old in the United Kingdom.Teenagers would be required to do a certain number of hours of voluntary work each year and take part in a two-week “civic exploration” trip as part of the proposals.

Though not required, the Onward think tank’s proposed program would require youths to opt out if they did not wish to participate. There could be as many as 600,000 children engaged. In a piece for the Telegraph, Ms. Mordaunt warmly backed the plan, claiming that it would encourage youngsters’ “goodwill and community spirit, energy, and imagination.”She claimed that given the turmoil of the Covid crisis, it might encourage “good mental health and resilience.”

There is nothing “more rewarding than serving your community and nation,” according to the House of Commons leader.A willing volunteer is the most effective person to assist others. Serving your town and country is the most satisfying thing you can do, she declared.Numerous young individuals struggle with their mental health, to find meaning in their lives, and to experience a sense of belonging. One component of the solution can be taking action to assist others.

The resilience, abilities, and pride in one’s community and country that many people lack can be developed via service.National service, according to Ms. Mordaunt, is a “old idea,” but the most recent proposal, which is not official policy, may be a “modern version.”The idea from Onward will go a step further than David Cameron’s National Citizen Service.

At the age of 16, everyone would be automatically enrolled, eliminating the need for recruitment. Many young people, according to Francois Valentin, a senior researcher at Onward, feel “disconnected from their community and nation.”He claimed that in order to prevent the younger generation from “falling further into crisis,” a “bold idea” is necessary. He claimed that participating in national service can assist young people learn the “skills they need to succeed” and is “unifying.”

He claims that far than being an outmoded concept, it is a “modern solution” that is in use all over the world. The Great British National Service, which was modeled after a program that is now in place in France, would be a “popular answer to young people’s challenges,” according to Mr. Valentin.Dan Jarvis, a Labour MP, also endorsed the idea, saying it will “develop skills, improve mental wellbeing, and enhance a sense of belonging.” He claims he wants all young people in Britain to have the option to take part in a voluntary national program.
