A proposal supported by Penny Mordaunt would mandate “National Service” for every 16-year-old in the United Kingdom.Teenagers would be required to do a certain number of hours of voluntary work each year and take part in a two-week “civic exploration” trip as part of the proposals.
Though not required, the Onward think tank’s proposed program would require youths to opt out if they did not wish to participate. There could be as many as 600,000 children engaged.In a piece for the Telegraph, Ms. Mordaunt warmly backed the plan, claiming that it would encourage youngsters’ “goodwill and community spirit, energy, and imagination.”She claimed that given the turmoil of the Covid crisis, it might encourage “good mental health and resilience.”
