Eskom announced that it would implement load shedding from 17:00 on Monday, 9 May. This comes after the national power supplier warned that power cuts could be implemented at short notice earlier in the day.

Eskom said Stage 2 load shedding would be implemented between 17:00 and 22:00 on Monday because the national power system is severely constrained.

In the earlier statement, Eskom said the power system would be particularly vulnerable during the evening peaks.

“Eskom expects to return a service generation unit each at Kusile and Kendal power stations before the evening peak.

“Should any of these units fail to return as expected the power system will be severely constrained, presenting an increased probability of load shedding at short notice,” said the parastatal.

Eskom is yet to release a full statement on the reasons for the implementation of load shedding. This information will be added once it is available.

This is a developing story.
