Eskom confirms extended seven-hour power outage as Cape Town schedules critical electricity maintenance in Atlantis

If you’re living in Atlantis, Cape Town, mark your calendars—your power is about to take a scheduled break.

Eskom, the national electricity provider, has confirmed a planned seven-hour electricity outage to carry out crucial maintenance work on the grid.

While it’s nothing unexpected in load-shedding-prone South Africa, this one is specifically timed and targeted for infrastructure upgrades.

When and Where the Lights Will Go Out

According to the City of Cape Town, the planned outages will take place on two days:

  • Friday, 20 June

  • Thursday, 26 June

On both days, the blackout is scheduled to run from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, assuming everything goes according to plan.

The city was clear: only specific areas in Atlantis will be affected.

If you want to double-check whether your home is on the list, they’ve published a detailed outage map here: https://bit.ly/4kyIqAa.

Power Could Be Back Sooner—Stay Safe

Here’s the important part—just because the outage is planned for seven hours doesn’t mean it’ll last the full stretch.

The City has warned residents that electricity may come back at any time during the maintenance period.

That means every plug point and cable in your home should be treated as live the entire time.

The city’s advice? Switch off all appliances during the outage.

This helps avoid nasty surprises like power surges when the lights flick back on. Better safe than sorry.

A Heads-Up and a Thank You from the City

Cape Town’s metro authority is asking for everyone’s understanding during this necessary work.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the cooperation and patience of residents,” the City said in a statement.
