Christopher Nkunku’s Chelsea journey might be nearing an unexpected early exit—just two years after arriving with high expectations and a hefty price tag.
Enzo Maresca, the man now calling the shots at Stamford Bridge, has hinted that Nkunku’s time in blue could be up sooner than many fans hoped.
From Leipzig Star to Stamford Bridge Uncertainty
When Nkunku joined Chelsea back in 2023, he brought a stellar record from RB Leipzig—70 goals and 55 assists in 172 games.
That kind of form made him one of Europe’s hottest prospects.
But his dream move to the Premier League hasn’t quite lived up to the billing.
Injuries disrupted his debut season, limiting him to just 14 appearances.
Last season, he did manage to find the net 14 times in 43 games, but the numbers tell only half the story—only three of those goals came in the Premier League, and he struggled to lock down a regular starting spot.
Maresca Offers No Guarantees
Following Chelsea’s 3-0 win over ES Tunis in the Club World Cup group stage, Maresca was asked about Nkunku’s future.
His response was carefully worded but far from reassuring.
“If Christo is here with us, it’s because we believe he can contribute.
But like with many players, the window brings uncertainty,” Maresca said.
“We’ve said it before—when the transfer market is open, anything can happen.
Players can come in, and players can leave.”
Manchester United Come Knocking
With Chelsea seemingly open to options, Manchester United have reportedly expressed interest in signing Nkunku.
French outlet L’Equipe claims United have already made contact, and a swap deal involving Alejandro Garnacho has even been floated as a possibility.
Chelsea initially valued Nkunku at £60 million during the January window amid interest from Bayern Munich, but he chose to stay.
Now, the equation might be different—especially with other attacking options in play.
Competition and Penalty Drama
Nkunku’s versatility as a No.10 or second striker hasn’t been enough to displace Cole Palmer or Nicolas Jackson in the lineup.
And now, with the arrival of Liam Delap—who just scored his first goal for the club—the competition has only intensified.
Against ES Tunis, Nkunku stepped up to take a second-half penalty, only for VAR to intervene and deny him the chance.
It was a small moment, but perhaps symbolic of his current situation at Chelsea: close, but never quite the main man.
What’s Next for Nkunku?
Whether Chelsea are truly ready to move on from Nkunku remains to be seen.
But Maresca’s “anything can happen” comment has certainly opened the door.
With clubs like Manchester United and Bayern Munich lurking, and Chelsea evolving under new leadership, Nkunku could be part of a summer shake-up.
For now, fans will be watching closely—because this one could develop fast.
